Coronation Street review: Maggie's a murderer, Carla's at the end of her tether, and Megan's awful

Everyone's behaving VERY badly on the cobbles
Kerry Barrett

Our Coronation Street review this week is fairly bleak – again – as there is very little in the soap to feel joyful about. Except Christina, whose presence continues to be one of the only fun things in Corrie right now.

We could do with some more light among all the darkness, but saying that we enjoyed this week’s episodes – even if they didn’t feel very Christmassy!

Here’s what we thought of the action in this week’s Coronation Street review.

Maggie could be Coronation Street in another way

We found out more about Maggie Driscoll this week when we were treated to some flashbacks about her younger days.

And it was revealed that she killed her husband by shoving him downstairs on her birthday.

Turns out she doesn’t have a nice side like we’d hoped. In fact, she’s meaner than we could possibly have imagined.

As well as killing her husband, Maggie was also cheating on him – or at least she had been. That’s why she and her husband were arguing at the top of the stairs before she pushed him.

Which is interesting, because now we’re wondering if Maggie’s got a link to someone else in the Street. Some viewers are even speculating that the man she cheated with was Peter Barlow! Peter! Barlow!

There are also rumours that Peter could be Ben’s dad, as the affair was said to be around 10 years before the flashback. And Ben said his dad died when he was 11. We’re not sure if that works with the ages of everyone involved, but if it brings Peter back to Weatherfield, we’re definitely in.

Maggie’s really nasty

Anyway, alongside Maggie’s actual murderous back story, we also saw her other son, Finlay, who’s living in Florida now – and frankly we don’t blame him. Because he saw what his mother did.

And in the present day we were treated to some pretty shocking examples of how nasty Maggie could be. She was poisonous to Lauren when she walked into the room just after teenager Will had tried to kiss her. And she was manipulative and mean when she was ‘reading’ Alya’s cards, planting the seed that she should be jealous of Adam and Eva.

There’s definitely a lot more to come from Maggie.

Megan’s a terrible person

One person we do want to see suffer the wrath of Maggie, is awful Megan. Megan’s just as manipulative as Maggie is, and poor Will is oblivious to how cunning she’s being. Megan’s taken up with Daniel Osborne – no blonde arriving on the cobbles is immune to Daniel’s charms, it seems! When Will was jealous she told him he was behaving like a child.

But when Will kissed Lauren, Megan was furious.

She’s playing with the teenager’s emotions, forcing him to check his behaviour, and controlling him in a creepy, coercive way. This abuse is hard to watch and already we can’t wait for Megan to get her comeuppance.

Lauren’s definitely keeping an eye on things, which is good to know.

Becky’s awful too, but we knew that

Another person we’re longing to see the back of, is blooming Becky Swain. We do feel like we’re going round and round in circles with this storyline.

Costello’s still in hospital. Carla tricked Becky into revealing her determination to win Lisa back and it didn’t matter.

Blah blah blah. The only present we want this Christmas is a Swarla reunion.

Carl looks at Debbie's phone

And Carl’s a bad one too

Could we please add Carl to add to the list of people we want to see getting justice? He’s just so horrible. Swindling money out of Debbie when she’s at her lowest is awful. We hated how he even used paying the deposit for Debbie’s rearranged wedding to top up his own bank account.

And sympathising with Tyrone when he found out the police were dropping his hit and run case was awful too. He really is the worst.

We’re intrigued, though, by Debbie making herself a note to call Elaine. Elaine is Carl’s mum, right? What could she reveal?

Shona's baby shower in full swing

A baby storm

Pregnant Shona held a baby shower this week, though as Maria said, it was more of a storm than a shower. Poor Shona was putting a brave face on things, but then she had a meltdown about her unborn daughter’s potential health issues. It was tough to see her so upset. This story is very bleak – we hope it has a good outcome in the end.
