In the last year, the cobbles have been home to some rather dark and sinister faces. But, it’s about time the soap said hello to some lighter characters onto the Street. Carl is the lowest of the low (Credit: ITV) Corrie villains rundown Over the last year or so, it seems as though almost every newcomer has turned into a villain. And, that’s if they didn’t already have baggage before turning up in Weatherfield. We’ve seen Mick and Lou Michaelis rock up and kill PC Craig Tinker, stab Kit Green, and attack Gary Windass. Article Continues Below Read all the latest Spoilers On screen, viewers have then also seen Becky Swain ‘return from the dead’ and kidnap Carla Connor, Theo Silverton abuse Todd, Carl Webster frame Debbie Webster for the Corriedale crash and attempt to steal her money… And, then there’s also Megan Driscoll who is grooming Will, Maggie Driscoll who killed her husband, Will Driscoll who attacked Daniel and left him for dead… And, now there’s Jodie who had lied to Shona by stealing the story of a domestic abuse survivor and branding it as her own. What a year! And, with Jodie having just added to the list, fans have been quick to share their frustration over the number of villains in Weatherfield right now. Coronation Street fans complain over number of villains on screen One fan complained: “So Coronation Street have introduced ANOTHER nasty character, when are we going to get someone nice, I always used to like that Corrie whenever they had dark storylines, they always had something amusing happening to balance it out, but now that doesn’t seem to happen.” Another commented: “I feel the same, I commented on another post ‘Can a person just visit without becoming a villain?’ They’ve completely unbalanced the show.” A third fan moaned: “Worst part is that all of the villains have not even been in Corrie for a year. First it was Mick, then Theo, then Carl, it only took February – April for all 3 of them to appear. Then you got Becky, Maggie, maybe Will as a villain or Megan, then Jodie.” Maggie’s a murderer (Credit: ITV) Opinion: Coronation Street needs no more villains It has come to the point where viewers can expect every newcomer announcement to come with a dark twist of some kind. Well, at least, it certainly seems that way. Don’t get us wrong, we love the odd soap villain here and there but how many does one Street need? It’s not realistic to have them all swanning about the place at the same time, and means most storylines on-screen are sinister with little joy. Introducing more light-hearted characters would break up these heavy hitting scenes rather nicely. We’re thinking more characters along the lines of Christina Boyd – a great addition to the show. It would also help bring Corrie back to its roots. And, oh do we love a nod to the classic times. We had slight hope that Maggie Driscoll could be the key to switching up the obvious pattern amongst new characters at the moment, but we were sadly mistaken. Introduced as a strong female character with quick wit, we were excited to see her at the centre of the action. But, of course, even she had to bring along a murderous backstory and help teen Will cover up a near-fatal attack on poor Daniel Osbourne. Give us a newcomer who makes us laugh, who gives us a moment to breathe, and who doesn’t have skeletons hidden away in their closet for a change. Please!
