All talk right now is of the big Emmerdale and Coronation Street crossover episode, but before that let’s not forget about Christmas – and the soaps have now released details of when they will air over the festive season.

With some hour-long specials and a bumper package of visits to the Dales, Christmas is looking good this year. Well, maybe not for the residents of Emmerdale who will likely face devastation and trauma, but for us viewers at least!

Emmerdale schedule leading up to Christmas

So, hardcore fans amongst us know that Emmerdale airs every week night at 7.30pm on ITV. It also has an early release of the evening’s episode every day at 7am on ITVX and YouTube.

However this schedule is often subject to change. Football, rugby, other sporting events and special documentaries often nudge Emmerdale out of its slot.

And one of the biggest changes of the year comes in December. So let’s take a look!

Fans thrilled

Emmerdale fans are ecstatic that the soap will be on for an hour this Christmas Day. In previous years it has only been on for half an hour, which has been the subject of huge disappointment for many viewers.

“ITV HAS REVIVED THE HOUR LONG CHRISTMAS SPECIALS OF EMMERDALE!!! LIFE IS WORTH LIVING,” shouted one with excitement on social media.

Another agreed: “Emmerdale on for one hour on Christmas Day. This made my day.”

“Emmerdale hour-long christmas special?!?! We are SO BACK,” rejoiced a third. Meanwhile a fourth added: “Emmerdale and Corrie are back for an hour each on Xmas Day this year. THE WORLD REJOICES!”

Soap schedule changes next year – including when Corriedale is on

Of course, after January 2 we are expecting a full change to the soap schedule on ITV. Although no date has been confirmed, Corriedale, the special Emmerdale and Coronation Street crossover episode to kick off the big changes, is expected to air on Monday January 5 2026.

In a press release sent in May this year ITV announced: “For the first time in British soap history, the hour-long episode will see characters from both soaps come together in a celebration of the soap genre.

“To herald the beginning of the new scheduling pattern, both soaps will mark the occasion in spectacular style, as the combined production teams embark on an ambitious stunt that will have everlasting consequences for everyone involved.

“The distinctive worlds of Emmerdale and Coronation Street will merge for one night only in a ‘mash-up’ of our two favourite communities.”

Following the special episode, both soaps will then return to the ‘new’ normal pattern of transmission. Each soap will have have a 30 minute slot every weekday evening. Emmerdale will air at 8pm and Coronation Street will air at 8.30pm on ITV1 and STV.

Episodes will also continue to drop at 7am each morning on ITVX and STV Player.
