Joanna Page has landed a new job with the BBC and, if you are partial to a charity shop gem, you’re going to love Shift the Thrift.

The brand new series “celebrates the booming charity shop scene” and Welsh star Joanna – who adores second-hand bargain hunting herself – will be presenting it.

Shift the Thrift is described as “warm-hearted” and for all the family. It also raises awareness of shopping sustainably while helping local causes.

Joanna, 48, says: “I absolutely love charity shops and have been customising and up-cycling clothes for years, so this show is right up my street. It’s fun, fast, and gives people great ideas on how to find value in second-hand treasure – all while supporting brilliant local causes.”

Shift the Thrift: How the BBC show works

Shift the Thrift sees two canny contestants going head-to-head in a bid to make as much profit as possible. They will be challenged to uncover hidden treasures in charity shops before sprucing them up and selling them at auction.

Each episode begins in a different town. Joanna will meet two guest experts before heading off to explore the local charity shop scene. They will rummage through everything from clothes and jewellery to vintage bric-a-brac.

Joanna will then introduce the experts to two contestants, before handing them a custom shopping list. Each list will include an item the players will have to refashion and upcycle. They will also be challenged with a local scavenger hunt.

When it comes to the customising, the contestants will be helped by some of Britain’s best social media up-cyclers. Then it’s time for the sales pitch!

The contestants must now try to make as much profit as possible by selling their charity shop items in a fast-paced, live streamed auction.

Who keeps the profit?

Given the very nature of the show, viewers will be pleased to hear about what happens to the profit. Any money made over and beyond what the contestants paid of their items will go straight to a charity shop of their choice.

Julian Carey, commissioning editor for BBC Cymru Wales, has described Shift the Thrift as a “timely and warm-hearted TV treat”.

She adds: “We love a bargain and we love the thrill of the hunt and this series is all about the fun to be had rummaging for treasures and tracking down unique finds.

“It’s also a celebration of our network of charity shops which are a backbone of fundraising in Britain and a brilliant model for how we can shop sustainably and cheaply while supporting good causes at the same time.”
