A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is hiding a secret Targaryen who can see the future in plain sight

We're back in Westeros with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and a major player was just revealed without anyone realising

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuted this week, and while it’s a welcome change of pace for Game of Thrones, there are still powerful characters lurking in the shadows.

Anyone who’s experienced the thrills of tales set in Westeros will know that it’s a pretty dangerous place. Between dragons, backstabbing criminals, and corrupt kings and queens, you’re never far away from peril in Game of Thrones.

Thankfully, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set during a period of peace in Westeros. There’ll be no dragons in this series, for a start. But there are still a lot of mysteries and connections to the wider timeline to look out for.

While everyone is wondering who Egg really is, we noticed another exciting Easter egg in the background of the first episode that should get tongues wagging.

***Warning: spoilers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ahead*

Dunk and Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Daeron Targaryen was in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 1

A lot was going on in that inn as Dunk settled down for some food en route to the Ashford tourney. He’s the only one there, aside from a drunken man passed out in the background.

However, while Dunck is speaking to the innkeeper, the other, mysterious patron awakens from his stupor. He then tells Dunk: “I dreamed of you. Stay the [bleep] away from me. You hear?” With a knife in hand, Dunk is right to be cautious, but the innkeeper tells our protagonist not to worry.

It’s not just the knife that piques Dunk’s attention, though. As the drunken man stumbles away, he places a coin on the table with a very familiar sigil on it: a three-headed dragon.

You don’t have to be an expert on Westerosi history to know that this is the crest associated with House Targaryen, one of the most powerful families in the Seven Kingdoms.

It turns out, this was no drunken fool. Well, it was, but he’s also much more than that; this seemingly innocuous background character is actually Prince Daeron Targaryen.

Why Daeron Targaryen is a big deal in Game of Thrones lore

We already know that Ser Duncan is the ancestor of a Game of Thrones character, but this subtle introduction to Daeron is a big deal, too.

Daeron Targaryen, also known as Daeron the Drunken, is the eldest son of Maekar I Targaryen. He’s also what’s known as a dragon dreamer, a rare power even among the Targaryen clan.

This ability is not without its pitfalls, though. Dragon dreamers see this as a curse, in fact, and the likes of Aemon Targaryen have even been driven to their death by their nightmarish visions.

It’s also the same power we saw Helaena possess in House of the Dragon, and it left her feeling more than a little uncomfortable as she witnessed visions of rats and “a beast beneath the board”.

So, what does Daeron’s warning in episode 1 have to do with Dunk and the wider story? Well, in the novella the show is based on, we know that Daeron’s dream involves a dragon falling on Dunk.

Given all the dragons in the kingdom are already dead, we can infer that Daeron actually fears Dunk will kill a Targaryen. Which one, however, is a question for another day.
