Anne Hegerty faced backlash after a spectacular loss on The Chase last night, which handed Bradley Walsh’s team of players a huge cash win.

Last night’s show (March 6) saw Liz, Victoria, Phil and Albert (get it?!) battle it out with The Governess, Anne Hegerty.

And, largely thanks to 24-year-old university administrator Albert, they walked away with a hefty five-figure sum.

What happened on The Chase last night?

After their Cash Builder rounds, the full team made it through to the Final Chase, playing for a total prize of £18,000. Young Albert was responsible for putting half of that into the prize pot, with the team putting 17 steps between themselves and Anne in the Final Chase.

“I didn’t think that was a particularly tricky set of questions,” said Anne as she returned, “that was fairly straightforward”.

However, her performance in the Final Chase was anything but…

Anne passed on questions and got several questions spectacularly wrong, with the team – well, Albert– completing so many pushbacks that host Bradley Walsh told him: “Right, go and sit up there,” gesturing to The Chaser’s seat.

After their win was secured and Anne defeated, the team celebrated.

“No disrespect, but The Chaser made two spectacular errors,” said Bradley, as Albert revealed he’d be spending his share of the winnings on a deposit on a house.

“I just happened to know the answer to your questions and not mine,” said Anne, defending her loss. “There you have it, they do make mistakes,” said Bradley wrapping up the show. “Even one of the top top female players on the planet.”

Viewers react

The Chase viewers were quick to pile on poor Anne. “This is absolutely abysmal from Anne. They’ve won. Embarrassing,” said one. Another asked: “Anne, what’s going on babes?”

“Anne had a shocker,” said a third. “Wow! The Governess is having a nightmare,” another agreed. “Smashed it. Anne was absolutely atrocious,” said another.

Others echoed Bradley’s sentiments and asked: “Does Albert fancy being a Chaser?” “This guy Albert should be a Chaser,” said a second. “Think young Albert should join the Chasers,” said a third.

Others said that, due to Albert winning the majority of the pushbacks, he should’ve been allowed to take home the £9k he put into the pot, instead of splitting it equally. He went home with £4.5k instead.

“Albert that was all you lad, they should let you keep the 9k,” said one. “Albert carried that team,” said another. “He should get 17k and the other three share 1k between them. He single handedly beat Anne there,” said another.

“Albert must be feeling a little bit sick to have split the pot!” another declared.

Has a contestant from The Chase ever become a Chaser?

Yes, they have!

Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis appeared on The Chase as a contestant back in March 2017. During his game, he too won £9k in his Cash Builder round, taking on Chaser Paul Sinha.

Bosses were so impressed with his performance that he was offered a job as a Chaser. Darragh – who had a shocker himself earlier this month – made his debut as The Menace on the ITV show in November 2020.

So we guess it’s a case of watch this space when it comes to Albert joining the gang!
