Black Ops finally returns to the BBC tonight with the first episode of series 2, and in addition to its two returning leads, some familiar faces have joined the cast as guest stars.

If you’re already watching The Traitors later, you may as well stay on BBC One for Black Ops.

The award-winning comedy series first aired in 2023. It followed Dom and Kay as their careers as community support officers were upended by a special undercover mission, with a detective tapping them to infiltrate gangs dealing drugs in East London.

At the end of the last season, they were reinstated as PCSOs. However, Black Ops series 2 will see them get a major promotion – and tangle with some famous guest stars.

Black Ops series 2 cast and characters

Gbemisola Ikumelo and Hammed Animashaun both reprise their roles as Dom and Kay in Black Ops series 2.

Since the first series, you may have seen Animashaun alongside David Mitchell in the BBC’s Ludwig, or Apple TV’s short-lived Time Bandit revival.

Meanwhile, Ikumelo landed a recurring role in The Paper, the first proper follow-up to The Office (the US version, that is).

“Being back on set for series 2 is like rediscovering your favourite shoes. A little bit older and stiffer but even more fabulous,” Ikumelo said in a statement.

“I can’t believe some of the amazing things we’ve been able to achieve with this show the second time round.

“Fans of series 1 will be right at home again with Dom and Kay’s crazy, funny shenanigans, while old and new viewers alike will be totally invested in the stakes and real world danger they find themselves in.”

Only two other stars have carried over from the first series (so far): Robbie Gee (Snatch, Underworld) as Morris and Jo Martin (Holby City, Doctor Who) as Julie.

Cathy Tyson guest stars as Fischer

Who is Fischer in Black Ops series 2?

Fischer is introduced in the opening scenes of Black Ops series 2. In short, she’s Dom and Kay’s boss in Thames House, overseeing the MI5 agents and all of their operations.

She’s a no-nonsense type of person – especially when Dom and Kay inadvertently interfere with missions with pizza-related mishaps. However, she’s also keen for Dom to learn her place at MI5 and progress under proper protocols.

What is Cathy Tyson famous for?

The 60-year-old actress was most recently seen in another hit BBC drama: Blue Lights, in which she played Dana Morgan in series 3.

Don’t be surprised if you’ve seen her in other projects, though. One of her earliest and most notable credits was ITV’s ’90s crime drama Band of Gold, where she played Carol Johnson.

She’s also appeared in Night & Day, The Bill, Grange Hill, and series 13 of Death in Paradise.

Nigel Havers in Black Ops series 2

Who does Nigel Havers play?

It’s difficult to speak about who Nigel Havers plays in series 2 without getting into spoilers. Let’s just say, he’s a pivotal character in the overall story, and he’s the chairman of the Ivydale Residents Association.

Where you recognise Nigel Havers from

Even if you don’t follow the soaps, there’s a good chance Nigel Havers may look a little familiar. He played Lewis Archer in Coronation Street for 10 years, with his character being killed off in January 2019.

He’s also starred in some iconic, acclaimed films; specifically, Chariots of Fire and Empire of the Sun.

However, he’s enjoyed an extensive career in television, whether it’s roles in Don’t Wait Up and Netflix’s The Gentleman or a brief stint on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in 2010.

Who is Annette?

Much like Nigel Havers, there’s very little we can say about Annette Badland’s role without spilling details from the story of series 2. However, we can say this: she’s also a member of the Ivydale Residents Association.

What else has Annette Badland been in?

Amazingly, if you asked anyone where they recognised Annette Badland, there’s a vast range of possible answers.

EastEnders fans will remember her role as Babe Smith in the 2010s, while she also starred in Doctor Who, Bergerac, and the first series of Outlander.

Her film credits date back to 1977, too, starring in the likes of A Christmas Carol (one of the best Christmas movies of all time) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

However, she may be best known for one of her most recent performances: Mae, the pub’s landlady in Ted Lasso.

Ed Speelers plays Steve

Who is Steve?

Ed Speelers plays Steve, a charismatic MI5 agent from technical operations, whom Dom meets in a bar. In the first episode, he asks her to help him look at a file without anyone knowing, and… that’s all we can say.

Ed Speelers movies and TV shows

Gen Zers and millennials will know Ed Speelers, even if they don’t realise it. He played Eragon in… Eragon.

He’s also starred in some major TV shows, whether it’s playing Jimmy in Downton Abbey or starring in Wolf Hall, Outlander, and Netflix’s You.

Tom Stourton in Black Ops series 2

Tom Stourton portrays Tom

Who is Tom in Black Ops series 2?

Don’t expect to see much of Tom Stourton in Black Ops series 2. He plays one of Dom and Kay’s colleagues at MI5, and he only pops up in a couple of episodes.

Although, rather memorably, Dom does tell him, “You’d be kinda hot if you weren’t such a knob.”

Tom Stourton roles before Black Ops series 2

For a certain generation, Stourton will be instantly recognised from his time on CBBC’s Horrible Histories.

You could describe his filmography as… eclectic. For example, he had a small role in 2013’s About Time, and he played Edward Snowden in The Spy Who Dumped Me. He also appeared as one of the Kens in Barbie.

Since his debut on Horrible Histories, Stourton has starred in Stath Lets Flats, The Windsors, Daddy Issues, and Prime Target.
