Call the Midwife continues with series 15 this Sunday, and episode 3 sees a familiar face join the guest cast from the world of soaps.

This week, viewers will see Rosalind’s confirmation carried out. A few days later, she visits a patient with multiple sclerosis, and is concerned when she discovers the woman’s young cousin eating from the kitchen bin.

Meanwhile, Joyce goes on secondment to St Cuthbert’s. She is tasked with supervising the ante-natal clinic, which is under revolt as fed-up pregnant women impatiently wait to test their urine…

Joyce quickly puts things in order and meets a single mother who has a placenta praevia. She is distressed about her family situation, worried about bringing up her child alone and concerned that she might need a caesarean section…

Enter guest star Cathy Murphy who plays the young mum’s own mother. She can’t bring herself to forgive her daughter for having a child out of wedlock. Here’s everything you need to know about the guest cast of Call the Midwife series 15 episode 3.

Cathy Murphy plays Moira in the guest cast of Call the Midwife series 15 episode 3

Essex-born actress Cathy Murphy, 58, joins the cast of Call the Midwife as the mother of a ‘disgraced’ young pregnant mum.

Old school soap fans will find Cathy’s face very familiar… Although she’s been on our screens since the 80s, she is probably best known for her returning roles in EastEnders.

In 1991, she popped up as Lorna, a brief love interest of Mark Fowler. That lasted all of five episodes, until she returned in 2005 as another character. This time, Trisha Taylor, the abused wife of Ray Taylor and mother to Leo Taylor.

In 2010, Cathy made yet another comeback to the Walford soap as yet another new character. Julie Perkins, a role she played until 2011, was an old friend of long-running character Billy Mitchell.

Soap fans might also recognise Cathy for playing DC Cheryl Barker in Channel 5’s Family Affair between 2003 and 2004. The soap was axed a year later.

As a jobbing actress, Cathy has also popped up as multiple roles in series such as Casualty, Doctors, Holby City, and The Bill.

Anybody older than 40(ish) might well remember the actress as Tilly Watkins (later Foss) in the 90s period drama The House of Elliot. She played the role of the hardworking seamstress between 1991 and 1994, in all three seasons of the drama. It followed two sisters in 20s London working to achieve success in the dressmaking business.

Other notable roles include Miranda McDipper in The December Rose, Beth Simms in Fearless, and Doreen in Summer of Rockets.

Who else pops up?

Bosnian actor Aleksandar Mikic stars as Laszlo Kovacs in the guest cast of Call the Midwife series 15 episode 3. He made his very first TV appearance in a handful of 2002 episodes of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. He played Dhori. Since then, Aleksandar is probably best known for Atif in Keeley Hawes drama Identity, Jozef in EastEnders, and Viktor Zima in The Bay. Most recently, he portrayed Dmitry Kovtun in the true crime drama Litvinenko.

Margareta Szabo portrays Laszlo’s wife Vera Kovacs. Margareta is an actress of Hungarian-Greek origin, born in Budapest, Hungary. On UK TV, she’s best known for her roles in Bleachers, and The Feed. Soap fans might recognise her as Agnes Novak in EastEnders, or Dr. Cywinski in Emmerdale.

Abra Thompson, who plays young mum Eileen Hudson, is a rising star of British TV. Her biggest role to date has been Hannah Ellis in the 2021 series of Showtrial. She’s also portrayed Sophie Huxley in This Country, Jessie in Trying, and Emily Buswell in Beyond Paradise.

Lastly, Doreene Blackstock is Sister Marcus. She has played Annie Reiss in Robson Green drama Wire in the Blood, Marji Webster in Doctors, and –perhaps most notably – Beatrice Effiong in all four seasons of Sex Education. Doreene recently portrayed Candaisy in Mr Loverman, and Mabel in Brassic.
