Cooper & Fry continues with episode two of four this week, and Call the Midwife fans will recognise actress Megan Cusack in the guest cast.

The latest visit to the Peak District-set crime drama sees DC Ben Cooper and DC Diane Fry called to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl, Laura Kirkham.

They are sent to the wealthy family estate where Laura’s parents Dominic and Charlotte are adamant that their ex-gardener Lee Bateman is to blame for the absence of their cherished daughter… But, after Laura’s body is found in the woods nearby to the Kirkham Estate, suspicion surrounds the family and their employees.

Bringing the story to life are a great ensemble cast of guest actors, who join the leading stars Rob James-Collier and Mandip Gill.

Who is Gemma Ward in Cooper & Fry?

Gemma Ward is the fiancée of the Kirkham Estate’s ex-gardener Lee Bateman – and, at first, the prime suspect when teenager Laura Kirkham disappears. She is actively hostile to the police, and is determined to stand by her man. Until the case takes a devastating turn.

Megan Cusack plays Gemma Ward

Cork-born actress Megan Cusack, 29, joins the cast of Cooper & Fry episode 2 as Gemma Ward. Call the Midwife fans will know Megan for playing Nurse Nancy Corrigan in the BBC medical drama. She joined the cast in 2021 as a pupil midwife, before becoming one of the most beloved members of Poplar’s Nonnatus House.

However, the fan favourite left the show in series 14 this year, and won’t be appearing in the upcoming series 15. The last series bid a sad farewell to Nancy in quite a dramatic exit. At the very end of series 14, we saw Nancy tie the knot with Roger. However, their big day ended up being more eventful than they could ever have anticipated when Nancy went into labour. She ended up giving birth in the back of an ambulance with Nurse Crane on hand to help.

Megan Cusack, who played Nancy, subsequently confirmed that she had left the show after four years. She revealed that her character’s dramatic wedding and labour episode were her last.

Cooper & Fry is Megan’s most significant role to date after leaving Call the Midwife. She has also appeared in Say Nothing, The Cherry Orchard, Doctors, and The Borgias.

Who is Helen Miller in Cooper & Fry?

Ben Cooper pays Helen Miller a visit during the course of the investigation. Helen is the niece of groundskeeper Harry Dickinson, who finds some vital evidence on the estate he works on. Turns out Ben and Helen knew each other at school, and haven’t seen each other since. She’s a divorcee after her marriage to a farmer didn’t work out. Could this be a perfectly-timed love interest for Ben?

Who is Dominic Kirkham in Cooper & Fry?

Dominic Kirkham is the rather snotty owner of wealthy family Kirkham Estate. When his daughter Laura goes missing, he immediately blames the ex-gardener Lee Bateman. Turns out Dominic had recently sacked Lee over his inappropriate relationship with Laura, including wearing no top in her presence, and “smoking weed” with her. But there’s a LOT more to this story…

What has Stephen Lord been in before?

Salford-born actor Stephen Lord, 53,  portrays Dominic Kirkham. Soap fans will know Stephen best for playing Jase Brown in EastEnders, a role he portrayed between 2007 and 2008. Coronation Street fans might also remember the actor for playing Tez Wyatt in 2021, before he went on to play Tony Meddon in Vera. 

He is also famous for playing Dominic Meak in Shameless between 2012 and 2013, Warren Clements in Casualty, and Jonno Fox in Common As Muck. Early roles included PC Steve Jackson in City Central.

He’s also played Teddy in The South Westerlies, Darwin Craven in Luv, Malcolm in Once Upon a Time, Stuart Callaghan in Marcella, and Warren Roper in Penny Dreadful.

Most recently, Stephen has portrayed Ted Bolt in fantasy thriller Sanctuary. The series centres around a small UK town named Sanctuary, which is shaken by murder accusations after a boy is discovered dead from an accident.

Who is Charlotte Kirkham?

Charlotte Kirkham is the mother of the missing teenager in Cooper & Fry, and the wife of the rather controlling Dominic. As Ben and Diane investigate their daughter’s disappearance, more and more dark secrets tumble from the disfunctional family.

What is Siobhán O’Kelly known for?

Irish actress Siobhán O’Kelly stars as Charlotte Kirkham in the cast of Cooper & Fry. She first came to fame playing Ciara Ní Cheallaigh in the Irish language soap set in an imaginary Connemara village. Siobhán appeared in the soap between 1998 and 2001.

She went on to appear in Irish comedy Paddywhackery, and An Bronntanas, before playing Kate Mulryan in Dominion Creek between DI Merritt in EastEnders, Gearóidín in Saol Ella, Claire McDonnell in The Tourist, and Elizabeth Lucey in Blackshore.

More recently, she played Roise Boyd in Borderline, Lena Temple in The Hardacres, Colleen Sweeney in Bad Sisters, and Catherine in Mixtape.

Who else appears in the cast?

Jobbing actor Philip Judge stars as Helen Miller’s uncle Harry Dickinson. Across a 30-year career, he’s appeared in episodes of The Clinic, Fair City, Rock Rivals, and Red Election.

Patrick Martins portrays Lee Bateman. He’s best known for playing DS Luke Byrne in the 2022 crime drama Redemption, and Olaudah ‘Laddie’ Cambridge in The Confessions of Frannie Langton. He’s also appeared as Gavin in Northern Lights, and Emmanuel Okafor in Harry Wild.
