Did Arthur kill Ray? As he acts suspiciously, Emmerdale viewers don’t have to wait long to find out
Arthur may have been protecting his mumEmmerdale has added another suspect to Ray’s murder list tonight, as Arthur Thomas acted very suspiciously throughout the episode.
While many Emmerdale fans believe it’s someone on the main suspect list, it seems Arthur is more involved than we knew. And after tonight’s episode, it looks like he would be very capable of murder.
But what exactly happened? And when can Emmerdale viewers expect to learn the truth about Ray’s death? Here’s everything we know.

Arthur acted suspiciously in Emmerdale tonight
Tonight, Ray’s body was found in Jai’s van at the Depot. And very quickly, the police were trying to get answers. But with quite a lot of people wanting Ray dead, it seems there is a lot of information to find.
But when Billy headed to the cafe, he filled everyone in on how the body had been discovered. And Laurel immediately looked shaken.
Later, Nicola tried to make sure Laurel was okay but this just left her annoyed as she doesn’t want anyone thinking she was okay with what Ray was doing.
But when Nicola left, Arthur appeared beside his mum, and she told him off for pulling another sickie.
However, things get more suspicious when she told him that Ray’s body has been found – leaving him shocked.
At the very end of the episode, Laurel, while wearing gloves, throws a red duffel bag into the bin, then throws a bunch of bin bags on top of it.
So now the big question is, has she just covered up a murder that her son committed?

Did Arthur kill Ray?
Emmerdale fans immediately began wondering if these scenes indicated that Arthur may have killed Ray. And they took to social media to share their theories.
One said: “Wonder if Laurel is covering for Arthur?”
Another theorised: “Maybe it was Arthur and that’s why he’s pulling sickies.”
“I think Arthur killed Ray and Laurel is shaken because her son stepped up to protect her” a third penned.
But while the theories continue, Emmerdale’s show boss confirmed when viewers will learn the truth. And thankfully, it’s not that long to go.

When will Ray’s killer be revealed?
Speaking to press about upcoming storylines, producer Laura Shaw revealed that viewers are about to discover the truth about Ray’s killer.
She explained: “Following the discovery of Ray’s body, villagers’ secrets will come out as the mystery surrounding Ray’s death is finally solved.
“Before the end of January, a special week will flash back to the night of the murder, revealing which of the multiple suspects is responsible for Ray’s death.”
So, with only a few more weeks left in January, it seems Emmerdale viewers are so close to learning whether Arthur killed Ray. Or if it was someone else entirely.

Is there a series 2 of Rebus?
Great news for fans of Rebus, as BBC One has confirmed the series will be returning for another run. This follows the first series which landed in May 2024. Fans of dark detective dramas lapped it up, and the critics loved it too.
So it's no surprise that Rebus will be back, with Richard Rankin reprising his role as the sardonic DS Rebus.
Writer Ian Rankin, who worked as Executive Producer on the series, said: "Season one of Rebus ended on a cliffhanger. Only screenwriter Gregory Burke knows what happens next. So I'm hugely excited that season two will soon be with us. Rebus is back - mean, moody and as magnificent as ever!"
Of course, fans will know that Ian Rankin has written 25 Rebus books. And all of them are screaming out to be adapted! Writer Gregory Burke adapted the books for TV.
In series 1, the writer reimagined John Rebus as a younger Detective Sergeant. The rookie DS found himself drawn into a violent criminal conflict that turned personal when his brother Michael, a former soldier, crossed the line into criminality.
Rebus found himself torn between protecting his brother and enforcing the law to bring Michael to justice. The series explored family, morality and class through an emotionally-charged story.
What's the plot?
The new series will continue to explore DS John Rebus' complex world "as he navigates Scottish crime and personal conflict".
A synopsis tells us: "Series 2 of Rebus will explore the links between violent criminals involved in the drug trade in Edinburgh, and the professional bourgeois world of law and finance, where police sometimes fear to tread."
Paula Cuddy, Executive Producer and Co-CEO at Eleventh Hour Films, said: "After three wins at the RTS Scotland Awards 2025, we couldn't be more thrilled to now share that we are reuniting with Ian Rankin's celebrated Scottish detective, brilliantly portrayed by Richard Rankin, to bring a second series of Rebus to the BBC. No doubt it'll pack a punch and there'll be some sardonic Rebus comments along the way. We can't wait!"
