Emmerdale fans unhappy with show's return: 'Wish I'd watched the football'

Joe Tate's kidney theft plot took a bizarre turn - again

Just when you think Emmerdale can’t get any more bonkers they go and air an episode like last night as Joe Tate’s kidney theft plot took an even more bizarre turn. And fans have been left wondering what on earth they were watching!

After a week of being pretty much off-air, most viewers were looking forward to their hour-long Emmerdale fix. But the instalment left quite a few wishing they hadn’t bothered!

What happened in Emmerdale last night?

Well, as if Joe stealing a kidney wasn’t far-fetched enough, on Thursday July 11 Joe was kidnapped and paralysed by crazed doctor, Crowley, who had performed the previous kidney operation.

It was more ‘your money or your kidney’ than ‘your money or your life’, but you get the gist – Joe had to give up the entire contents of his bank account or else Crowley would cut out his kidney and feed it to Shaun’s dog.

Joe was terrified and we were perplexed. How had Crowley set up a makeshift hospital with so much medical equipment? What on earth was the cocktail of drugs he’d used to paralyse Joe, but not his head, and leave him still able to speak? And were we even still watching Emmerdale?!

Joe did give him the money in the end and Shaun took Joe home where he waited for his paraylsis to wear off. It was really, really quite ridiculous!

Fans definitely agreed!

After days of being messed about with their usual Emmerdale viewing, those watching at home weren’t happy that this was what they had been waiting for.

“This had to be the most ridiculous episode I have ever watched and I’ve watched a lot!” shared one.

Another agreed: “Well, that’s an hour of my life I’ll never get back! Wish I’d watched the football!”

“Joe Tate’s storyline is daft! I couldn’t believe what I was watching/hearing!” added a third.

A fourth fumed: “Considering we have lost out on so much Emmerdale, you would have thought the hours episode would have been much better.”

“Can you believe that we have sat through an hour of that [poo]. There have been some diabolical episodes but that must be up there with the worst ever,” said one more.

A sixth wrote: “What on earth was that storyline with Joe Tate and the scene with plastic sheeting? I mean this is Emmerdale not Dexter. Absolutely ridiculous – you have great storylines with Sarah and her baby grief and then the storyline with Joe, ruins it.”

Sarah Sugden – the shining light of Emmerdale last night

One thing did have fans gripped, however, Sarah breaking down over her baby trauma. Desperate for a baby of her own, Sarah finally confided exactly how she felt in grandad Cain. And it certainly gave fans all the feels.

“This was one of Emmerdale’s most moving conversations, beautifully executed because of the calibre of actors they have on Emmerdale,” said one viewer.

Another added: “Katie deserves an award. OMG She is so talented, amazing actress.”

“What beautiful scenes with Sarah and Grumpy. Moving and very emotional. Well done to all,” agreed a third.

The Repair Shop's Mark Stuckey leaves grieving son in tears as he hears late dad sing again: 'Just mind blowing'

The Repair Shop tonight sees electronics expert Mark Stuckey breathe new life into a retro audio device containing a recording of his late dad singing.

Michael Whitehead from Lancashire was the last person to walk into the tent tonight (April 1). And his Repair Shop story ended on a pretty emotional note…

The Repair Shop tonight: Michael brings in his late dad's reel-to-reel recorder

"This is actually my dad's old reel-to-reel recorder," Michael explained, before revealing that his late dad used the device to learn lyrics during his days as a performer.

He explained that his dad Alan – who went by the stage name of Alan Curtis – used to sing in the pubs and clubs of Greater Manchester. Songs by crooners such as Neil Diamond and Frank Sinatra were what Michael best remembers his dad performing.

Opening up about seeing him sing live as a youngster, Michael said: "Hearing him hit those notes and people applauding, just the sense of pride, and he was just so humble about it."

'When Dad passed away, the music died'

He then explained that his dad stopped singing in the late 1970s. "When Dad passed away, the music died that day. It was after he passed away and we were doing a clear out and it was just sat on the floor in the corner of the wardrobe."

"So did you try it?" asked Mark. "I did," Michael replied. "And what happened?" "Nothing," he confirmed sadly. "Not even a light or a move of the needle, nothing," he added, before revealing that it probably stopped working in the 1980s.

Mark then asked if he knew what was on the tape that was threaded into the machine. Michael said he was unsure, but he thought the song I Understand by Freddie and the Dreamers was on the tape.

'That's my dad… that's him'

Later in the show, Michael returned, who revealed he was "anxious" for the reveal.

As the cloth was removed, Michael declared: "Wow! That looks like it did in the 1980s. Wow."

"Switch it on," Mark urged.

As he did, the sound of his dad singing I Understand rang out across the barn.

"That's my dad," said Michael tearfully. "That's him."

He wiped away tears as he pressed the stop button on the audio recording device. "Wow, it just sounds great. I couldn't imagine a more haunting song to be on there, it just blows me away, it really does," he said.

"He's left you a special gift behind," said Mark. "I think so too. It's just brought back so much… thoughts of just being young, fun, and a happy place. To have my dad on there, it's just mind blowing, it's just amazing."
