Dennis Nilsen’s house is still standing in London, over 40 years after the serial killer lured young boys and men there to kill them.

Des, David Tennant’s harrowing true crime drama that’s now streaming on Netflix, has sparked renewed interest in Nilsen’s case.

The series begins with police responding to a report of human remains blocking a house’s drainpipe. This really happened, and it led to Nilsen’s arrest in 1983 and an immediate confession of his shocking crimes.

That was 42 years ago. Today, anyone can find Nilsen’s former address. However, despite its location in a sought-after London suburb, its value is reflected in its grim past.

Where is Dennis Nilsen’s house?

Dennis Nilsen lived in 23 Cranley Gardens in North London’s Muswell Hill; specifically, he resided in 23D, an attic flat.

This was his second address, having lived in 195 Melrose Avenue until October 1981. He killed 12 people there: Stephen Dean Holmes, Kenneth James Ockenden, Martyn Brandon Duffey, William David Sutherland, Malcolm Stanley Barlow, and seven unidentified victims.

In his previous property, he was able to hide his victims’ bodies under the floorboards, something he couldn’t do in his new flat.

So, he resorted to flushing their remains down the toilet. Three people died in his Cranley Gardens home: John Peter Howlett, Archibald Graham Allen, and Stephen Neil Sinclair.

This is also where he lured Carl Sotter, a survivor of Nilsen who testified against him at trial.

How much is it worth?

Dennis Nilsen’s house in 23 Cranley Gardens is currently worth £505,000, according to Rightmove’s estimate.

It last sold for £520,000 in 2024, an 82% appreciation in value from its £285,000 sale less than 10 years prior.

Rightmove’s sale history only dates back to 1996, when it was bought for £83,000. Its current value is a huge jump, but other properties in the same area have fetched a lot more money.

For example, Flat A in 46 Cranley Gardens was sold for £770,000 in 2024. Other addresses on the street have been listed as whole homes, rather than apartments, and they’ve been sold for as much as £1.9 million (as of 2023).

195 Melrose Avenue is valued at £1.5 million, as per Rightmove’s estimate. It last sold in 2022 for £625,000.

Reuben John, an estate agent with Paul Simon, spoke to Business Insider in 2015 after Nilsen’s former residence received a substantial renovation.

When asked if he believes the property is haunted, he said: “Being a person of logic and science, I don’t think it is.

“Saying that, just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there. So I’m sitting on the fence with that one, like any good estate agent.”
