I, Jack Wright ending explained: Who murdered the millionaire and what it means for upcoming series 2

That was quite the cliffhanger!

BBC One drama I, Jack Wright was a whodunnit with a difference, and the ambiguous ending left things wide open for a series 2.

Series 1 focused on the shocking death of high-powered businessman Jack Wright in an apparent suicide. When his wife and two sons discovered they’d been largely left out of his will, the legal battles commenced. But why had the millionaire changed his will, and what happened in his final hours?

As his many wives and children fought over the remains of his huge estate, a dogged police detective investigated. DCI Hector Morgan subsequently uncovered the shocking truth about the toxic Wright family.

The finale of the crime drama ended on a cliffhanger – frustrating for some, intriguing for others. After DCI Morgan and DC Kat Jones discovered that Jack’s death was, in fact a murder, not a suicide, the family’s legal battles over his will intensified.

Here’s the ending of I, Jack Wright unpacked, including what we discovered about the millionare’s death. The first series originally aired on U&Alibi and BritBox in 2025, and recently arrived on BBC One.

Who killed Jack Wright?

In the finale episode of I, Jack Wright, Sally faced the wrath of an increasingly unhinged Arnaud. Rose shocked Bobby by taking a huge risk, and DCI Morgan finally charged someone for the murder of Jack Wright.

However, who killed Jack Wright – the central mystery in the drama – was not fully answered in the series 1 finale.

Emily and Reuben were arrested for Jack’s murder, after messages between them appeared to show them plotting his death. In fact, clothes covered in Jack’s blood were even found in Reuben’s possession. Although Emily claimed the clothes were hers, and the blood was from an altercation with Jack, the evidence spoke for itself.

In a shocking revelation, Emily (Ruby Ashbourne Serkis) claimed her grandfather was a sex pest creep. She said that, when she was just 13, Jack had sexually molested her. Specifically groping her, and touching her breasts when he thought she was sleeping.

After years of silence, she had finally confronted him. Of course, he denied all knowledge of the incident, and the pair had ended up in a scuffle – with her elbowing him in the nose. This happened just moments before he died, so it didn’t look good for Emily, even if she was telling the truth.

Did Sally kill her husband Jack?

Police also arrested Sally, Jack’s third wife of 17 years. At the end of the series, both Emily and Sally were in jail. Sally told the story from behind bars, with both claiming they were innocent of Jack’s murder.

Sally actually killed her former lover in the drama series. While she went to prison in the ending of I, Jack Wright, the show clarified that she killed Tissier. She did not kill her husband, Jack.

The documentary-style interviews also hinted that she might be taking the fall for someone else.

Did Grace kill her ex-husband Jack?

Despite Emily and Reuben being in police custody, the ending of I, Jack Wright delivered another killed twist seconds from the end.

Viewers saw Jack’s first wife Rose hand herself in to the police. She told officers that she had killed Jack. But surely this was all a ruse to protect her granddaughter Emily?

We know Rose is a very kind-hearted person. Was she really capable of murder? Unlikely, to be honest, but series 2 will undoubtedly reveal all. There’s also the fact she’s dying of cancer. Made total sense for her to try to take the fall.

Who ended up with the inheritance?

In court, Jack’s third wife Sally lost her claim to the will and all the money that would have come with it. This was because of a pesky clause in her pre-nup with Jack. Sally had cheated (multiple times) and it would cost her dearly. A DNA test proved that Jack wasn’t the father of her son Josh – and he’d known all along.

Of course, this astute planning by Jack also helped prove that he wasn’t confused by dementia when he changed his will. He was sharp as a tack before he died. The canny silver fox also cut Josh from his will. He would receive nothing.

Meanwhile, the court ruled that Jack’s sons Gray and John should receive £5million each. Of course, this meant that Jack’s granddaughter Emily wouldn’t get as much. But then she wouldn’t really need it in jail! Emily would also remain chief executive of the company and keep her shares.

While Emily’s portion of the inheritance was reduced to £5.4 million, Rose’s assets was cut to £100,000.

What else happened in the ending of I, Jack Wright?

  • Georgia’s secret gambling left her and John broke. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she had also been having an affair with Mary, Jack’s housekeeper.
  • Gray admitted his issues with addiction, revealing they started after his parents separated. We can only imagine how the creature of chaos will spend his five million pound inheritance…

Is there a series 2 of I, Jack Wright?

There IS a series 2 of I, Jack Wright and it will air on BBC One later this year. While the first series originally aired on U&Alibi and BritBox in 2025, series 2 is exclusively launching on the Beeb.

The second series sees the return of Nikki Amuka-Bird as Sally Wright, John Simm as Gray Wright, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis as Emily Wright, and Daniel Rigby as John Wright.
