Mint on BBC One: Filming locations include Scottish town never used in a TV drama before
The series is currently airing on Monday nights
BBC One drama Mint is a “gangster romance” about forbidden lovers, set against the dramatic backdrop of an industrial town in Scotland – but what filming locations were really used?
The new eight-parter lands this April 2026, and puts magic realism against the industrial backdrop of a UK town. And it makes for some dramatic scenes.
But where did the cast and crew of Mint really film the drama, and what specific filming locations were used? Here’s everything you need to know!

Mint on BBC One filming locations: Where is it set?
Mint on BBC One is set in the Scottish metropolis of Glasgow, a port city on the River Clyde in the country’s western Lowlands.
It’s known for its “Victorian and art nouveau architecture” (notably by Charles Rennie Mackintosh), and its rich industrial shipbuilding heritage. Nowadays, it’s a “national cultural hub”, home to landmarks such as Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland. In 2008, it was named a UNESCO City of Music.
It is frequently voted the “World’s Friendliest City” and the UK’s friendliest city, often cited as a top reason to visit. Talking about setting the series there, creator, writer and director Charlotte Regan said: “Grannies are the friendliest people on Earth, especially when you’re in random towns in Scotland. You just bring a really nice home-baked cake around and offer it out, and then bang, you’ve befriended five grandmas! We met lots of great people. A lot of my family are from Scotland too. So, we spent a lot of time in Glasgow, which has the friendliest grannies in the world.”
Of course, those who have watched any of the “unconventional crime drama” will know that one of the central characters is a Lindsay Duncan’s “sassy” Ollie. Ollie is Shannon’s grandma, and is “a sweary, shouty, gun-cleaning, very stylish grandma.”

Where was it actually filmed?
Although cast and crew of Mint did film some of the scenes in and around Glasgow, it is largely set in nearby Grangemouth.

Although it’s not in Glasgow, it’s about 30 miles away, and found on the south bank of the Firth of Forth. Grangemouth is a town in the Falkirk council area within the Central Belt of Scotland. While it is a major industrial hub, it is a separate town.
In fact, Grangemouth is situated roughly midway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, which is also around 30 miles away. The area is famous for its large petrochemical plant and Scotland’s largest port.
Mint on BBC One filming locations: ‘Grangemouth don’t get much filming’
Talking about filming in Grangemouth, writer Charlotte Regan admitted it’s rarely used for filming. She said: “I love Scotland and I’d go most summers when I was a kid. I did a show there a few years ago and I just love the crew in Scotland. You feel like everyone’s very much a collaborative part of the show. So that was a big part of why we filmed there.
“In Scotland, people are interested in it, especially somewhere like Grangemouth, where they don’t get much filming. We tried to engage the community and when you do that, I find, they’re super welcoming. Every day, they come and hang out and I love that atmosphere. The local cast are amazing as well. There are so many amazing actors in Scotland.”
Emma Laird, who plays plays Shannon, reveals she was mid-shoot on another project when she auditioned for the role.
She told us: “I was flying to Venice Film Festival the next day, but I went in to read [for the part]. I was so terrible at the Scottish accent, despite my dad being Scottish!”
