Richard Osman responds to Pointless Celebrities axe claims
BBC’s Pointless first launched in 2009 and has gone on to become one of the channel’s most successful daytime quiz shows. Its celebrity version was then aired in 2011 and has seen several famous faces take part.
However, this week, TV Zone reported that Pointless Celebrities had been shelved – but its daytime version would continue to air.
The publication said a BBC spokesperson told them: “Whilst there are currently no plans for any new celebrity editions this year, Pointless remains a much-loved programme for audiences on BBC One and iPlayer.”
But now, after word got round about Pointless Celebrities apparently being axed, host Richard quickly responded to clarify things.

‘Definitely no more from me’
“No idea where this news has come from today, we stopped making this show in 2022!” he said on X, reacting to a post.

One social media user replied to Richard and explained: “They dragged out the airing of the episodes so much that they were still showing new ones as recently as August 2025! I’m still not 100% sure they’ve shown them all!”
Richard then jokingly quipped: “It’s nice to see myself in my early thirties though.”
Someone else then asked Richard: “Is it likely/possible to return? Or is there definitely no more?” Richard said back: “Definitely no more from me, but who knows!”
Richard’s replacement confirmed
In other Richard news, the telly star announced his departure from House of Games in March. He explained on his podcast, This Is Entertainment, that after nine years at the helm, it was time to hand over the reins.
“It has been such a great pleasure, and honour, to present House of Games for the last nine years. With the absolute best team in television. But it’s time to let someone else have a go. And I’m very excited to hand over the House keys to the lucky new host!” he said.
It was then confirmed that Michael Sheen would be taking over as host of the show.
“Beyond thrilled to be handing the #HouseOfGames keys over to the one and only Michael Sheen,” Richard wrote on Instagram.
“I promise to put the hoover round before he arrives. Best of luck Michael, you’re such a great choice, and I know you, and the viewers, will have an amazing time!”
