Robert's prison trauma resurfaces in early ITVX release
Robert's still haunted by his time behind bars
WARNING: The below piece contains huge spoilers for today’s episode of Emmerdale, which is streaming now on ITVX and YouTube but has not yet aired on ITV1 – in which Robert Sugden’s prison trauma resurfaces.
Robert Sugden’s prison trauma resurfaces in Emmerdale today (airing Tuesday, November 11) when he gets some upsetting news. Robert was released from prison earlier this year, but his pain has followed – as has secret husband Kev, who arrived in the Dales last month.
Robert’s been guarded about his experiences behind bars since then, hinting that he went through some truly harrowing stuff before meeting Kev. Robert offers a glimpse into his past in today’s episode, in the wake of some shocking news from back behind bars.

Shocking news for Robert in early ITVX release
Robert and Kev returned from their mini honeymoon in London today, after renewing their vows last week. Upon his return, Robert revealed that Kev was eager to move in with them and become one happy family together.
As they tried to figure out how they’d let him down gently, Kev arrived with some shocking news for Robert. “It’s Jez,” Kev told Robert. “He’s killed someone in prison.”
And who is Jez, exactly? The local prison bully had being tormenting Robert in prison until Kev stepped in. Jez moved on to another target – and had subsequently killed them.
This revelation had Robert feeling as though that Kev had saved his life. Later, as Victoria told Aaron that Robert had received some bad news, Robert realised that the time was right to come clean to Aaron about everything.
He started off by admitting he hadn’t been in prison on the Isle of Wight the whole time – but had actually been transferred back to Hotten long before then.

Standalone Robert prison episode will explore his time in prison
Today’s developments rather neatly set us up for Robert’s special standalone episode on Wednesday where further flashbacks will explore his time in prison.
Last week, Emmerdale aired a special April Windsor episode, while another centered around Bear Wolf on Monday.
Now it’s the turn of Robert, with actor Ryan Hawley revealing: “The flashback begins around five years ago. We go through different time periods right up until May of this year, just before Robert is let out and interrupts Aaron and John’s wedding.”
He added: “There’s one particularly nice little twist. Something happened in prison that is massively pivotal.”
