Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea tells the terrifying real life tale of the Costa Concordia disaster – and it is packed with footage from that fateful night.

The documentary has just landed on Netflix and viewers will get to see the real horror of what unfolded as the luxury cruise ship sank.

Around 4,000 people had just set sail off the coast of Italy in January 2012 when the captain decided to go off course.

Francesco Schettino had the bright idea of sailing past the Tuscan island of Giglio, where the staff member’s family lived, and sounding the Concordia’s horn.

But it ended in absolute disaster. Miscommunications on the bridge resulted in the cruise liner hitting a rock reef.

We’ve all seen the movie Titanic, so it doesn’t take a genius to work out what happened next. Yep, it sank.

Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea lands on Netflix

This is definitely the documentary to watch this weekend. Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea is film-length, lasting a full 80 minutes.

Viewers may have already seen the trailer, which is illustrated with an eery picture of the Costa Concordia half submerged in the sea on its side.

One female passenger recalls: “One moment you are chilling and celebrating with your family. The next moment, you are just there, powerless.”

Suddenly, it is chaos. Onboard footage shows the lights dimming, tables covered in smashed plates and red wine and panicked passengers wondering what the hell to do.

The lady continues: “It felt like the ground under our feet opened. People were grabbing onto the walls and onto each other.”

Another passenger says: “This is straight out of a scene from Titanic.” Other surviving passengers describe the nightmares the ordeal has left them with.

One woman admits: “Every time you close your eyes you see something from the night.”

Her husband describes it as “the most terrifying moment” he has ever experienced with his family.

Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea has reports of the black box findings and audio recordings from the night. And there is some shocking revelations.

There are also pictures of the enormous damage done to the Costa Concordia when it hit the rock reef.

One man employed on the ship as a chef admits he couldn’t swim. His says he only had brief training in water while wearing a life jacket.

How many people died in the Costa Concordia disaster?

32 people died when the Costa Concordia sank. 27 of these were passengers and five of those who perished were crew members.

One victim’s sorry story is told in Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea. Viewers will hear how the woman tragically sealed her fate by returning to her cabin to change her shoes, as her feet hurt.

She had been travelling with her daughter, who survived. Recovery teams recovered the woman’s body two years later.

What happened to Captain Francesco Schettino?

At the time, the media branded Captain Schettino “Captain Calamity”. Investigators found that he had taken far too long to raise the mayday alarm. In fact, there was a 45 minute delay before he even told crew and staff about what had happened.

On February 11, 2015, an Italian court convicted Schettino of multiple offences, including manslaughter, causing a maritime accident and abandoning ship before all passengers and crew had been evacuated.

He was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He exhausted all of his appeals by 2017 and is currently serving his sentence in Rome.

An Italian court convicted five other Costa Concordia crew members of offences including manslaughter, negligence and causing the shipwreck. None of them, however, received prison sentences.

Costa Cruises, the ship’s parent company, accepted responsibility by paying a €1 million corporate fine (about £851,575.00) and did not face a criminal trial. The company also reached compensation settlements with passengers, with payouts reportedly ranging from €11,000 to €92,700 depending on individual circumstances.

It’s enough to put you off ever stepping foot off dry land, but a good watch nonetheless!
