The Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt starts with case of 'gentle giant' Jason Moore jailed for murder of Robert Darby
Robert was stabbed in a pub car park in broad daylightThe Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt is a brand new documentary series that lifts the lid on potential miscarriages of justice – and it starts with the case of Jason Moore.
Jason, described by a close friend as a “gentle giant”, was jailed in 2013 for the murder of Robert Darby.
Robert died from a stab wound to the chest when he was 42.

The murder occurred in broad daylight in a pub car park in Ilford, London, in 2005. Jason was later handed a life sentence with a minimum of 18 years.
But Jason has always protested his innocence – and even Robert’s own brother is convinced he didn’t kill him.
The Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt’s Jason Moore
Jason was labelled a “millionaire playboy” at the Old Bailey in London during his trial.
In The Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt, his good friend Sandra Dumont explains how he made his fortune gambling in betting shops. He’s described as a “mad good with numbers” and a “gentle giant”.
The documentary reveals how it all began after Jason went on a few brief dates with a woman called Adele Raynor. She happened to be the on/off girlfriend of Robert Darby in the early noughties.

Robert had a drug problem, in addition to mental health issues.
A journalist who investigated the case at length, Charlie Thomson, says of Robert: “He was famous around the area where he lived for his hair-trigger temper.
“He’d walk into a pub, something would irk him and all of a sudden he would be screaming and ranting and hitting people.”
Robert was said to be “obsessed to the point of madness” with the thought that Jason had “stolen his girlfriend”. Both Jason and Adele insisted this was wrong.

A big flaw in the case
Viewers of The Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt will hear how there were four men present on the day Robert died; Robert, Robert’s friend, Jason and his friend.
One lone witness claimed at the time he saw the “passenger of a silver car” stab Robert. Jason was the passenger in his friend’s silver BMW.
However, there is no DNA evidence – or any other evidence, including fingerprints – to stand this up. Yet a jury still convicted Jason of murder. He has maintained his innocence to this day.
Viewers will learn how the witness has since changed his story. They will also hear exactly what he has to say about it all now when he’s called out of the blue – and it’s shocking.
Robert Darby’s brother Tim joins campaign to free Jason
Jason and his family were warned by police – who initially believed his innocence – that their lives were in danger following Robert’s murder. The family went into hiding. Jason moved to Spain.
Jason returned seven years later and spoke to the police to clear his name. But instead, a second identity parade was held in 2012 and the original witness picked him out as Robert’s killer. He had failed to pick Jason out in 2005.
Jason was jailed for Robert’s murder in 2013 – but, in a massive twist, even Robert’s brother Tim thinks he’s innocent.
Originally terrified by the Darby family, Jason’s sister Kirstie and his friend Sandra have welcomed Tim into their lives. In a shock to viewers, they are all campaigning to have Jason’s sentence overturned.
Tim says in The Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt: “I said, ‘Look, they’ve put the wrong [bleeping] geezer away. We’ve got to get on with this. I don’t feel like justice has been done.
“There’s no way the geezer could have gone up against Robert. Jason Moore ain’t a rower, he’d want to walk away from it. He wouldn’t want to go back at Robert, not in a million [bleeping] years. Unless you’re nuts.”
Tim adds: “He should not be in there. I know [bleeping] 100% he hasn’t done this.”
