The F Ward on Channel 4: Anna Friel leads the cast of soapy Australian medical drama aimed at fans of The Pitt
The show is centred around the emergency department in the fictional Pines Hospital
The F Ward is an Australian medical dramedy landing on Channel 4 in the UK, and the lead role will be very familiar to British audiences…
Popular actress Anna Friel portrays lead general surgeon Dr Gloria Wall in the soapy comedy drama. Gloria leads a group of struggling medical interns at Pines Hospital. They have been given one last shot at becoming doctors, and it’s Gloria’s mission to help them get there.
The series originally aired Down Under on Stan in July 2026. And it subsequently became the fastest selling Australia drama ever (more on that below).
Here’s everything you need to know about The F Ward, coming to Channel 4 in October 2026.

What is The F Ward on Channel 4 about?
Scrub up readers, The F Ward is a brand new medical drama landing on Channel 4 this October. After a successful run in its home country, the Australian medical series now gets a Saturday night slot in the UK.
The comedy-drama follows a group of interns who are given one last shot at becoming doctors. Each of them, in their own way, has managed to fail on the job – whether it’s being sick on a patient, or fainting at the sight of blood. They are each well-meaning. But, you know, you wouldn’t necessarily want them looking after you if you were sick!
We meet Jimmy and Ellie who, in episode 1, are off to the worst possible start when they’re both late for the first meeting. But a violent storm soon pushes the interns into the deep end as casualties flood the hospital and the power goes out.
A synopsis for the series says: “Troubled interns get their last shot at Sydney’s underfunded Pines Hospital, battling personal demons and past failures while treating patients in life-or-death situations.”
How many episodes is it?
The F Ward is six episodes of roughly 45 minutes.
It’s a short run of just six instalments. This is pretty short compared to US hospital drama The Pitt, which is 15 episodes per season.

Who is in the cast?
Rochdale-born actress Anna Friel, 50, leads the cast of the Australian medical dramedy The F Ward. But, don’t worry, she’s not putting on a ‘fair-dinkum-flaming-galah- accent. She plays British Dr Gloria Wall, a fearsome and uncompromising general surgeon who must whip the group of flailing interns into shape.
Anna lived in Australia temporarily when she filmed the project.
The rest of the cast is largely Australian. Secret City’s Dan Wyllie stars as Dr Curtis Parker, opposite Bump’s Ioane Saula as Jimmy Seufale.
Meanwhile, the Mosquito Bowl’s Lola Bond plays Ellie O’Neill, The Society’s Alan Fitzalan stars as Josh Wilson, and Pulse’s Arka Das is Dr Kush Prasad.
Some well-known Australian actors pop up in small roles here and there, too. These include the always reliable Justin Rosniak as Luke, a patient with a bleed on the brain, and the equally excellent Alex Dimitriades as Stefan, whom Lisa and Josh meet at a bar.
Where was The F Ward filmed?
The F Ward is set in Sydney’s underfunded (fictional) Pines Hospital. Cast and crew actually filmed in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, specifically across the city’s Northern Beaches region.
Key filming locations include Mona Vale, which was used for beach and hospital-inspired outdoor scenes. It was modeled on the former Mona Vale Hospital main building.
North Narrabeen featured for coastal and surrounding area backdrops, and cast and crew used Frenchs Forest for indoor/studio work.
The production team also used Freshwater & Terrey Hills for additional local scenes across the Northern Beaches.

When’s the start date?
The F Ward starts on Channel 4 on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 9pm on Channel 4. Episode 2 follows at 10pm. Expect to see the subsequent four episodes follow on the next two Saturdays.
The series originally aired in July in Australia.
The F Ward reviews
There’s a “perennial appeal to medical TV shows” says The New Daily in its review of The F Ward. It said: “Comedy drama, The F Ward, is the latest Australian medical show. And it’s a good one. […] The premise offers a perfect setup for the screenwriters. Each character can have their own unique defect. For some, this is comical. Some are more serious. And then, of course, for the lead characters Ellie (Lola Bond) and Jimmy (Ioane Saula), the stakes are much higher.”
However, The Guardian wasn’t as keen. They said: “The six-part Australian series about intern doctors at an underfunded hospital is missing an essential ingredient.”
Calling it “amateur” in comparison to The Pitt, the critic added: “The pulse never really comes alive.”
The F Ward is the fastest selling Australia drama ever
Never mind the critics, though. The Stan original The F Ward is the fastest-selling Australian drama of all time.
The show has been sold to 100 markets after Paramount Global Content Distribution locked in deals including Channel 4 in the UK, Sky NZ in New Zealand, and SkyShowtime in multiple countries including Spain, Sweden, Norway, Croatia, Netherlands, Denmark and Portugal.
Medical dramas have “universal appeal”, and the show’s “underdog story and rising young cast” gave it a “real breakout energy”, Paramount said.
