The Night Manager viewers call out 'lame' and unforgivable 'plot holes' in series 2: 'It makes no sense'

You have to suspend disbelief...

The Night Manager is entertaining BBC One audiences with its current series 2 – but the thrills might be at the expense of accuracy according to some fans who have accused to show of several serious plot holes.

Viewers have called out some “lame” and unforgivable flaws in the Tom Hiddleston drama which continues on Sunday nights throughout January.

Episode 4 (January 18) revealed the truth about Richard Roper’s faked death, as well as reuniting Jonathan Pine with his former ally Angela Burr. It was an action-packed episode that left some fans viewers enjoying the ride, while others couldn’t help but slam on the brakes.

Here’s some of the plot holes viewers have called out in The Night Manager series 2.

Viewers call out The Night Manager for its ‘plot holes’

The first four episodes of The Night Manager have aired on BBC One and, while most viewers are fully onboard, others are having to “suspend disbelief”.

In episode 4 of the thriller, Teddy Dos Santos was on the hunt for prosecutor Alejandro in a bid to silence him. The man had vital evidence which would expose the real contents of that shipping container.

Alejandro’s life was in serious danger. So why was did he spend most of the episode standing in front of a window?

One viewer despaired, saying on Reddit: “Did it make anyone else nervous as heck that Alejandro, knowing he is being watched and hunted, is constantly standing at the window or out on the balcony?”

Another said: “I thought he was going to be sniped.”

A third added: “I kept thinking ‘Get away from the windows!'”

The amount of times Alejandro stood near a window or edge, I was half-expecting him to be taken out from a distance,” said another.

The Night Manager series 2 is ‘nothing but one big plot hole’

That wasn’t the only scene that viewers were left baffled by.

First of all, there was the fact that Teddy let Jonathan (who he knows as Matthew) leave Colombia. After everything he knew about Teddy’s business.

One viewer asked: “It makes no sense. Why is Jonathan Pine not killed the minute they have his money? They know he doesn’t have much more.”

Another simply added: “The show is entertaining if you suspend your disbelief. But it’s nothing but one big plot hole.”

Others noticed that Roxy’s switching languages when she called Pine to warn him would have alerted her captor to her motives. One said: “Roxy was talking to her mother in Spanish in the first conversation. And then when she was ‘leaving her a message’ (actually Pine) it was in English. Too obvious.”

Then, of course, there was Angela Burr and Jonathan Pine’s reunion in the Colombian airport. It was a very public place for a secret meeting about a heavily-armed drugs cartel with eyes are ears across Colombia.

One viewer wrote: “How casually Pine puts EVERYONE in jeopardy. Meetings in the open, characters at windows, not thinking it was a terrible idea for the prosecutor to tell someone else not the Supreme Court Justice herself about the shipment. I am entertained but this is silly and those with covert training would be much more covert!”

Another added: “Angela Burr getting from rural France to Columbia in about 12 hours is right on the edge of possible. The average flight from Paris to Columbia is 11 hours.”

Other complaints about The Night Manager series 2

After episode 3’s huge plot twist, some fans were just generally miffed about the reappearance of Hugh Laurie’s character Richard Roper.

One said: “The twist at the end of S2E3 is so lame, rehashing the past and not innovative at all.”

Another said: “Honestly they should just stick with another villain and let’s get on with something new.”

A third added: “Agree. Can’t stand the ‘he’s dead’ but now ‘he’s back’. It’s lazy.”

“Faked deaths are such a horrible, soap opera trope, which makes me start to side eye whatever I’m watching,” said another.

Others just questioned the strength of the characters.

“I’m not believing any of the characters at all,” said one, “none of them gel. It’s like they’re all acting at each other instead of with.”

Another added: “The Teddy and Mayra characters are just so poorly written.”
