What happens next as 'dying' Sam targets Nigel in her latest scam

Sam spotted an opportunity
Joel Harley

Sam Mitchell targeted vulnerable Nigel Bates in EastEnders tonight (Tuesday, December 9), spotting an opportunity to make some cash as his dementia symptoms took hold. Fearing that she’s dying of cancer, Sam wants a nest egg to leave for Ricky Jr. once she’s dead… and she’ll stop at nothing to get it.

Realising that Jack and Denise were stringing her along with an offer of £20k in exchange for her compliance, Sam found her Plan B after a conversation with Nigel.

Will Sam go through with scamming Nigel?

Sam made a deal with Denise

As their confrontation continued, Jack confronted Sam over her breast cancer claims. She insisted that it was true, although she hadn’t seen a doctor yet.

Just then, Phil arrived, taking his money back, and pooh-pooing Sam’s cancer claims. With a skint Sam now stranded in Walford, Jack encouraged her to join the family for dinner that evening.

Afterwards, he found Denise in The Vic, and informed her of the family dinner plans and Sam’s lump. Denise then joined Sam in the café, where Sam (who couldn’t even afford a coffee!) reiterated her refusal to seek help about the lump.

Realising that cold, hard cash is the way to Sam’s heart, Denise promised her £20k for Ricky’s fund – but only if she were to attend a doctor’s appointment to get the lump checked out. Agreeing to Denise’s terms, Sam made the call – or at least appeared to.

Later, before heading to the family dinner, Denise broke the news to Jack about the money. She informed him that she was just stringing Sam along though, and had no intention of giving her any money.

Sam plotted to scam Nigel in EastEnders tonight

That evening, Jack and the family arrived at the Slaters, where Lily had agreed to host the family dinner herself.

After dinner, Sam began to smell something fishy. And it wasn’t just Lily’s attempt at a fish supper. Realising that she was being played, Sam returned to Phil’s place, where she begged her brother for a place to stay.

Reluctantly, Phil agreed. As the Grinch huffed off to bed, Sam shared a moment with Nigel, who once again mistook her for Clare. Reminding Sam that he was still her ‘dad,’ Nigel reminded her that he still had ‘a few quid’ squirrelled away for a rainy day.

Will Sam resort to fleecing Nigel?

Sam backtracks on her deal in EastEnders spoilers tomorrow

With Phil and Julie busy filming Nigel’s movie in The Arches, Sam begins to smell a rat. Jack and Denise are irritated when they learn that she’s skipped out on her doctor’s appointment, and the family set about tracking Sam down.

Has Sam fled with Nigel’s cash? And can the family convince Sam to seek help?

Kelly Reily as Jackie Ellis

Strong-willed and unpredictable, Jackie, 40s, is a compassionate and inspiring schoolteacher in Morfa Halen. But we soon realise how precarious this life of hers is.. Three years ago, her 9-year-old niece, Nessa Taman, went missing and Jackie, then a police detective, was on the case. The investigation remains unsolved but the impact of it led Jackie to leave the force, suffer a breakdown and become estranged from her sister, Nessa’s mother. Nessa’s disappearance still stalks her and when Cefin, one of her pupils, is found dead we see how much Jackie blames herself for both his and Nessa’s fates: she feels she has a terrible track record with protecting children and doubts her own capabilities as a mother. Jackie knows the investigation into Cefin’s death could affect her deeply, especially when Detective Eric Bull arrives in town. When Jackie was in the police force Bull was her partner, and when her niece went missing, he accused Jackie’s sister of murder which brought about the end of her career.

Jackie’s instincts and intricate knowledge of the community put her in the perfect position to solve Cefin’s murder and give her a last chance
to get justice for Nessa. She must investigate but as her personal and professional lives collide she struggles with having to face up to her past. Jackie and Bull’s fractious relationship forms the soul of the narrative

– a platonic romance that lights up the screen as the two attempt to overcome the betrayal that broke them apart three years ago. Jackie’s journey takes her from feeling that the future is terribly precarious to finding a way to regain the hope she needs.

Rafe Spall as DS Eric Bull

Bull, 40s, grew up in the Black Country and, as an adolescent, Bull’s closest friend James was killed. Now a seasoned police detective, adherent to logic and law, Bull is a gay man whose brusque exterior masks a huge amount of emotion that he can’t understand or acknowledge. Under stress, he tries to create order from chaos, categorising the natural world around him and repressing an inner rage that he fears he can’t control. Returning to Morfa Halen, Bull is confronted by his failure to solve Nessa’s disappearance and by the wedge that was driven between him and Jackie when he accused her sister, Lydia, of murdering her own daughter. Over the course of the series, Bull’s usual ways of coping are challenged by the reopening of old wounds – his turbulent relationship with Jackie and an awkward reunion with a one-night-stand. When he encounters Cefin’s best friend James Rees, Bull sees a younger version of himself in the broken, lost nine-year-old boy grieving his best friend’s death. It’s through this unusual bond that Bull realises that his best friend’s death had a profound impact on his ability to form meaningful relationships. By the end of the series he sees that no man is an island and he must let people in – risking everything – including his life – to save the community.

Harry Lawtey portrays Dylan Rees

29. Cara’s brother. James’s uncle. Jackie’s lover. Works for Mac Jones at Sunnyside, rebuilding the sea wall. Lives alone on the edge of Morfa. Rakish and lazily handsome, Dylan’s spontaneity appeals to Jackie. His feelings for her run deeper than he lets on. A devoted uncle to James and a strong male role model.

Brian Gleeson stars as Mac Jones

40s. Dylan’s boss. Nisha’s husband. He lives with Nisha and their one-year-old son, Dash, in a house slightly outside Morfa, a ‘dream home’, that they are renovating. A family man with aspirations of reinvigorating Morfa, he is in charge of the rebuilding of the community funded sea wall.

Jonathan Pryce portrays Soloman Bevan

70s. Farmer and Bevan family patriarch: the Bevan Farm is in the
hills overlooking Morfa Halen and the land has been passed down through numerous generations to Solomon, who feels a deep affinity with it. An emotional man, Solomon prides himself on being self- sufficient, loyal to his family, and stoic, even as his traditional values face increased challenges.

Kimberley Nixon is Shell Hill née Cheryl Bevan

30s. Cefin’s mother, Solomon’s daughter, local butcher. Shell lives with her husband Danny Hill and children Nic (13), Noa (11) and Cefin (9) next to the family butchers in Morfa Halen. Tough and assertive, she is often sharp and critical of Jackie, having known her a long time and is prepared to speak to truth despite the consequences.

Mark Stanley stars as Danny Hill

30s. Cefin’s father, runs the local butcher. Shell fell for the gentle and pensive Danny by contrast to her stoic, masculine family. Danny feels Cefin’s loss acutely. He often struggles to speak up for himself.

Dino Fetscher plays Gareth Morgan

30s. Wales Environment Institute worker. Practical, outdoorsy, and kind. Having worked in Morfa for six months, Gareth is a realist about the danger the town is in and steps up to help protect the community.
He lives alone in a sparse house on the outskirts of Morfa and keeps a close eye on a weather front that could pose a danger.

Julian Lewis Jones stars as Osian Northam

50s. Radical environmentalist, aligned with the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement. Intimidating and shambling but tolerated by the community. Lives at The Ship Hotel under Carys’s watch. Carys’s brother.

DC JESS DENG (Naomi Yang)

30s. Bull’s Deputy SIO on the Cefin Hill case. Ambitious, enthusiastic, insightful, and often eager to please. She admires Bull and wants to win his respect, though she’s wary of Jackie’s influence on him. Privately Deng struggles with the fact that her mother doesn’t approve of her chosen career as a police officer and she does her best to fulfil her own moral code of conduct: to protect those in need.

NED BEVAN (Rhodri Meilir)

40s. Solomon’s eldest son. Farmer. Pragmatic but desperate to earn Solomon’s love and respect, he goes to great lengths for his family and to keep the farm afloat. He has two teenage children, Eddie (20) and Kath (18), with whom he lives in the farmhouse alongside Solomon.

BRYN BEVAN (Sam C. Wilson)

40. Solomon’s younger son. Farmer. Possessing characteristic Bevan family black hair. Large stature. Shares his father’s confrontational nature. Fiercely protective of his family, and a little hot headed. Married to Tess, they have five children. The family lives in a property on the farm.

KATH BEVAN (Leisa Gwenllian)

18. Grandchild of Solomon, and daughter of Ned. Part of the extensive Bevan brood, Kath is smart, conscientious and industrious, holding down a part-time job running a ferry boat. She and her siblings/cousins used to play with Nessa Taman before her disappearance.

EDDIE BEVAN (Gwïon Morris Jones)

20. Ned’s son. Red head. Tough, confrontational; Eddie is often looking to impress his dad.

CEFIN HILL (Jack Thomas-Humphreys)

9. Son of Shell & Danny, a pupil of Jackie’s. Cefin is a timid child who suffers from nightmares. He has a fondness for magic tricks and is usually found with his best friend James Rees. His murder is the second tragedy to befall Morfa Halen.

JAMES REES (Osian Emlyn)

9. Cefin’s best friend. Son of Cara Rees. Confident but after Cefin’s murder, he becomes thoughtful, taciturn, and haunted.

CARA REES (Lizzie Annis)

30s. James’s mother, Dylan’s sister. A grounded and shrewd single working mum with Cerebral Palsy. Lives with James in a house near Morfa’s seafront.

NISHA JONES — née TAMAN (Dinita Gohil)

30s. Mac’s wife. Nessa Taman’s aunt. Headteacher at the local primary school, who threw Jackie a lifeline when she quit the police by offering her a job. She and Mac have a one-year-old, Dash. She grew up with her mother Ira (who still lives in Morfa), and brother Devnand, who is married to Jackie’s sister Lydia.

KIERAN BENBOW (Morgan Watkins)

40s. A recluse and beekeeper in the off-shoot Spider Island community, where he lives on a houseboat. Once a town resident, he retreated after accusations during the Nessa Taman case. He has known Shell since childhood. Quiet, private, and conflict averse.

OWEN ELLIS (William Thomas)

70s. Father of Jackie and Lydia and doesn’t want to get involved with their grievances. Shares Jackie’s warmth and empathy. Now frail, Owen gardens and looks after his parrot.

LYDIA TAMAN — née ELLIS (India Mullen)

30s. Jackie’s younger sister, mother to Nessa. Married her childhood sweetheart Dev. Broken and guilt-stricken after Nessa’s disappearance. She and Dev left Morfa and haven’t returned.

NESSA TAMAN (Amara Atwal)

9 (missing). Daughter of Lydia and Dev. Niece of Jackie and Nisha. Grandchild of Owen and Ira. Her disappearance three years ago shook Morfa Halen. Now a haunting figure in Jackie’s dreams.

IRENE HASSAN (Eiry Thomas)

AUGUST ANTONOV (Janeks Babidorics)

30s. Farmhand on the Bevan’s farm. Lives in a caravan next to his cousin Victor. Well-built but scruffy. Sends his earnings to his family in Romania. Pretends to speak little English to avoid attachments. Troubled.
