Albert Square has been home to hundreds of EastEnders characters over its 40 year history, but it can be tricky at times to work out who actually lives where.

Here is our guide to who lives where in Albert Square and a little bit of history on the homes.

A brief history of Number 1

The property was previously split into three flats – 1A, 1B and 1C – but was made into one back in 2015. It’s one of the smartest properties in Walford.

When EastEnders hit our screens in 1985, 1A Albert Square was home to the Walford Surgery, which was run by Dr Harold Legg. The GP practice shut in 2015.

The middle flat of 1 Albert Square (known as 1B) was formerly the home of Walford legend Ethel Skinner and her pug dog Willy. It was also briefly lived in by the now deceased Heather Trott and her young son George.

On the top floor was flat 1C. Its former residents include Lofty Holloway and his wife Michelle Fowler. It was also the flat that Max Branning brought his son Bradley and wife Stacey to live in. They never got that far after Max and Stacey’s affair was revealed in Christmas 2007.

In 2015 the building was refurbished and made into one, three-story property. Gray Atkins bought it for his family, but it behind closed doors he abused his wife, Chantelle. She died in the house in 2020 during a violent row with Gray.

The current residents of basement flat 3A are cousins Bernadette Taylor and Felix Baker. The property is one of three flats in the same building, 3 Albert Square, which is owned by landlord Jack Branning.

Over the years many of the Square’s locals have lived in 3A. These include best friends Garry Hobbs and Minty Peterson, Billy Mitchell, Jay Brown and most recently Priya Nandra-Hart.

Flat 3B is currently occupied by Zack Hudson. The personal trainer moved in back in 2023 with his then-girlfriend Whitney Dean. Zack stayed put when Whit left the Square, and he temporarily took in troubled teen Tommy Moon.

In 1999, Dot Cotton spent a few months living at 3B with her friend Lilly Mattock. It was also home to Beppe di Marco and his young son Joe in 2000.

5 Albert Square – Flat 5A

Walford bad boy Ravi Gulati lives at Number 5A Albert Square with his two teenage children, Davinder “Nugget” Gulati and Avani Nandra-Hart.

It’s the basement flat of a house (5 Albert Square), which Jack Branning had redeveloped it into five flats. He still owns 5B-5E, but 5A is owned by Suki Panesar. She purchased the property in 2020 and moved in with children Kheerat, Vinny and Jags.

Suki later moved into 41 Albert Square, but has kept 5A in the family. She now rents it to her stepson, Ravi.

Do you remember?

In 2022, Ravi bludgeoned his father Ranveer Gulati to death at 5A with a clock!

5D Albert Square is where Alfie, Kat and their three sons Tommy, Bert and Ernie Moon call home.

Alfie came to live there in 2023, during which time Kat was still married to Phil Mitchell. Following their split, Kat reunited with Alfie and she and the boys moved in. Life at 5D is often chaotic, with five people cramped into the pokey two-bed flat.

18 Albert Square

Number 18, Albert Square is home to Billy Mitchell, his wife Honey and their two children, Janet and Will.

The property has a rich history and has featured in the soap since the beginning. Originally Number 18 and 20 were one building – ‘The Abercorn Bed and Breakfast’, which was run by an unseen character called Doris. Pat and Frank Butcher took over the business in 1989 and lived there with his three children, Diane, Ricky and Janine.

In 1998, the local council approved an application to turn Number 18 into a hostel for ex-offenders. It was renamed ‘Bridge House’ and was active for a few years. The property then became a B&B again, which was run by Patrick Trueman, then Kim Fox. Hands up if you remember ‘Kimberley’s Palace’?

In 2015, Kim sold her share and the property was divided into two separate homes – 18 and 20, Albert Square.

Billy Mitchell moved into 18 in 2017 has lived there since then. It’s the place where Honey and Jay had a lockdown fling, and where Billy, Jay and Honey nursed cancer-stricken Lola during her final days. She passed away in the house on May 31, 2023.

20 Albert Square

Currently there are no fewer than nine people living at Number 20. There’s Patrick Trueman and his wife Yolande Trueman, Kim Fox and her two children Pearl and Mica, Kim’s other-half Howie Danes and his son Denzel. Also Denise Fox and her young son Raymond are currently residents.

Patrick Trueman has called the place home since 2001. He first moved in when it was a B&B, which he ran with his son Anthony. Patrick remained living there when the business closed and the property was divided back into two houses.

Do you remember?

In May 2020, Patrick allowed Kat Moon and her kids, along with Mo Harris, Kush Kazemi, Arthur Fowler and Cherry Slater move in for a short period after they were evicted by Jean Slater. It’s a bit of a mystery where they all slept during this time.

Sonia looks stressed in her kitchen in EastEnders

25 Albert Square

Sonia Fowler is the owner of Number 25. She inherited the property from her grandmother Dot Cotton, who passed away in 2021. Sonia left Walford for a new life abroad in 2025 and is currently renting the property out to her cousin Lauren Branning. Following her split from Peter, Lauren now lives in the house with her two sons, Louie and baby Jimmy.

Number 25 remains largely unchanged from when it was Dot’s house. The kitchen in particular, still has the same yellow cupboards and strange cat face on the wall.

A lot of drama has gone down in that property. It was where Nasty Nick tried to poison his ‘beloved’ Ma and Bianca Jackson’s affair with Dan Sullivan was exposed in that very kitchen back in 1999. Then in 2019, Dot brought her friend Dr Legg back to Number 25 so he could spent his last days on the Square.

More recently, Number 25 was home to Sonia’s secret killer fiancé Reiss Colwell, who died in The Vic collapse during the live 40th episode.

27 Albert Square

Number 27, aka the house with the pink door, is owned by Jack Branning. He lives there with his two children, Amy Mitchell and Ricky Jr. Since early 2025 it’s also been home to Chelsea Fox and her young son Jordan.

There have been some big names who’ve lived at 27. Its previous owners have included Ian Beale, Archie Mitchell, Janine Butcher and sisters Roxy and Ronnie Mitchell.

Back in 2004 it was rented out to the Miller family, but the house burnt down in 2008 after deranged May Wright committed suicide by dousing the place in petrol and lighting a cigarette. It was later refurbished by Tanya Branning, and her builder husband Greg Jessop.

Jack bought the property in 2016.

29 Albert Square – Flat 29A

It might be one of Walford’s smallest properties, but Flat 29A has seen a big amount of drama over the years!

EastEnders fans will know 29A was the former home of Jack Branning and his wife Ronnie. It was on New Year’s Eve 2010 in that flat that Ronnie discovered her newborn son James dead in his cot. This led to the controversial baby swap storyline, where Ronnie switched James with Kat Moon’s son, Tommy.

Stacey Slater’s secret stalker Theo Hawthorne is another former resident. He moved in back in 2023 so he could keep a close eye on his prey.

Lauren Branning and her cousin Penny were the next tenants, choosing 29A as their home after returning to Walford in January 2024. They were joined by Lauren’s on/off boyfriend Peter Beale. But tragedy almost struck when Lauren accidentally started a fire in the bedroom, nearly killing her and son Louie. The pair were saved by Cindy Beale, who managed to get them out of the bathroom window.

Penny now lives in the property on her own.

Flat 29B is the upstairs flat in 29 Albert Square. It comprises of two bedrooms, a kitchen/diner/living room and bathroom.

Its current occupants are local policeman Callum Halfway, his mate Jay Brown and their stepdaughter, Lexi Pearce. Jay and Lexi moved into the flat after the death of her mum, Lola in May 2023.

Callum and Jay are co-parenting Lexi, while her dad Ben Mitchell is serving time in an American prison for credit card fraud.

Past tenants of the flat include the Mick and Linda Carter, who moved in after selling The Vic in 2020. The family lived in 29B throughout Lockdown, before returning to their beloved boozer the following year.

31 Albert Square

Usually the rowdiest house in all of Albert Square, Number 31 is home to the Slater brood.

There was a time that so many people lived in this house that fans were questioning if Number 31, was actually a Tardis. But following Stacey, Arthur, Hope, Lily and Charli’s temporary departure, and Harvey moving out, the place seems rather empty.

Currently there’s only Jean Slater, Big Mo Harris and Freddie Slater living in the five bed.

Births and deaths in 31 Albert Square

Four Walford residents have slipped off the mortal coil in Number 31 – with three of the deaths occurring in the living room.

Jay Brown’s grandmother Evie (remember her?) slipped away in December 2006. Two years later Robbie Jackson’s beloved pooch Wellard died from theobromine poisoning. In October 2010 there was further tragedy for the Jackson clan when Carol’s son Billie was found dead on the sofa from alcohol poisoning. And EastEnders fans mourned the death of powerhouse matriarch Pat Evans, who died at Number 31 in January 2012.

It’s not all doom and gloom – little Charli Slater was born in the living room in September 2023.

Do you remember?

Number 31 was actually once a vicarage! Back in 1997 it was home to the local vicar Alex Healey, who was the brother of Mel.

Phil and Peggy Mitchell also lived at 31 for a short while.

41 Albert Square

Suki Panesar-Unwin is the head of the household at 41 Albert Square. She lives at the property with her wife Eve, her son Vinny and Priya Nandra-Hart.

Number 41 has always been in Albert Square, but it wasn’t featured in the soap until 1993. Frank Butcher purchased the property to live in with his family, but then did a runner from Walford after running into financial trouble. It later became the home of Frank’s ex Pat and her new husband Roy Evans. They lived there with his son Barry, and a for a while, Barry’s wife Natalie.

The next tenants were the Moon family, who were followed by the Masoods in 2007. Masood Ahmed quit the Square back in 2016, but he still owns the house, which he rents out to Suki and co.

Deaths

Deaths at Number 41

Roy Evans suffered a fatal heart attack in Number 41 back in 2003. And Alfie Moon’s adored Nana passed away in his arms in December 2005.

Do you remember?

43 Albert Square

Number 43 is one of the most lived-in houses in all of Albert Square. It is currently owned by Sharon Watts, who lives there with her little boy Albie. In 2025, Sharon welcomed her half-sister Vicki Fowler back to Walford, who moved in with her boyfriend Ross Marshall and his wayward son Joel.

A brief history of Number 41

The house was originally owned by nurse Andy O’Brien and Debbie Wilkins. After Andy was killed by a lorry in 1986, Debbie sold 41 to slimy businessman James Willmott-Brown. He then sold it on to Alan McIntyre, who had the house converted in three flats (43A, 43B and 43C)

Previous owners of 43A were Den Watts, Grant Mitchell, Dot Cotton and Sean Slater.

43B was home to E20 club boss Steve Owen, who lived there with his sister Jackie in 1999. Other tenants included Melanie Healey, Heather Trott and Shirley Carter.

Flat 43C was owned for a time by Phil Mitchell, who then sold it to market stall holders Sanjay and Gita Kapoor.

In 2013 the house was reverted back into one property. It was bought and refurbished by Jack Branning, who then sold it to Ruby Allen. After Ruby was arrested she sold Number 43 to Sharon.

45 Albert Square (Rosedene)

For many fans, Number 45 (aka Rosedene) is regarded as the most important house in Walford. It’s been in the Beale family for generations and is situated on the corner of Albert Square and Bridge Street.

It was purchased by newlyweds Albert and Lou Beale back in 1935. They raised their family in that house, and Lou’s daughter Pauline Fowler and her husband Arthur inherited the property in 1988. Pauline lived there all her life, until her death in 2006.

It is currently owned by legacy character Ian Beale. Also in residence are Ian’s son Peter, his mum Kathy Cotton, her partner Harvey Monroe, and who could forget Jasper the parrot? He’s the pet of Kathy’s former husband, Rocky, who left Jasper in her care after he was sent to prison.

There are a few things that make Number 45 different to any other house on the Square. For starters, visitors tend to enter the house via the back door in the kitchen, and the front entrance is rarely ever seen. Its staircase leads from a doorway in the living room, rather than the hallway, as is traditional in houses of that style.

The house has a loft conversion, which was completed in 2015. And the side of the house is painted in a mural, to honour the Black Lives Matter movement.

Births and deaths in Number 45

This was the house where Lucy Beale was murdered back in 2014. Her shock death sparked one of the soap’s biggest ever whodunits, with the real killer – Bobby Beale – being exposed during the live 30th anniversary episode in 2015.

Lou Beale famously died the night of July 26, 1988 after giving every member of her family a dressing down.

In September 2000, Ethel Skinner passed away at Number 45. She had terminal cancer, but her best friend Dot Cotton assisted her suicide by giving her a fatal overdose.

And Pauline Fowler’s killer Joe Macer, went crashing out of an upstairs window at 45, after holding Dot captive.

46 Albert Square – The Queen Vic

Number 46 is, of course, The Queen Victoria Pub, better known as The Vic to all the locals.

The Walford waterhole has been home to countless characters over the years. The upstairs accommodation comprises of a living room, kitchen, bathroom and an unknown number of bedrooms. There have been times over the years where the number of people living at The Vic has gone into double digits. It’s always been a source of puzzlement and amusement as to where everyone actually sleeps!

The current owners of the pub are mum and daughter duo Elaine Peacock and Linda Carter. They live in residence along with Elaine’s husband George Knight, his daughter Anna and her pet dog Tyson. Completing the clan are three of Linda’s children. Grown-up son and lawyer Johnny, and her two youngest, Ollie and Annie.

55 Victoria Road (Pytchley)

Number 55 Victoria Road is Phil Mitchell’s gaff. The house, which is called ‘Pytchley’ backs onto Albert Square.

It was first seen on screen in June 1989 when the Karim family purchased it, but they only lived there a year. Michelle Fowler lodged at 55 with her daughter Vicki between 1991 and 1995. It was then bought by Michelle’s brother who lived there with his wife Ruth. When they split up he rented it out to a series of lodgers.

Other past occupants include the Ferreira family, and Ian Beale – who bought 55 to be his family home for a while.

In November 2010, Phil bought the property from Ian. He has owned it on and off since then. Phil currently lives with his best mate Nigel Bates, who is battling dementia. Phil invited Nigel to move in with him so he can help care for him.

George Street, Brewery Apartments

Brewery Apartments is a block of up-market flats, located on George Street to the left of Walford East tub station. The building was renovated into swanky apartments in the early 2020’s.

George’s smooth-talking son Junior Knight lives in one of the flats, although the number is unknown. His half-sister, Gina rents a room off him.

Another resident of the Brewery Apartments is a prostitute going by the name of Amelia. Her previous clients include Phil Mitchell. Amelia was last seen on screen in February 2025.
