All the moments from EastEnders' Christmas episodes that made no sense

We've been left with a lot to unpack
Joel Harley

Well that was a typically eventful Christmas in EastEnders, wasn’t it? This year’s bumper batch of episodes saw Nigel reconnect with ghosts of Christmas past, Chrissie reveal herself as Zoe’s tormentor, Max and Cindy hook up, and Anthony die.

Between all of the above, it was certainly a dramatic time on Albert Square. But, when you stop to think about it, did everything add up?

Here’s everything from this year’s Christmas episodes that made no sense.

All the moments from EastEnders’ Christmas which made no sense

1. Who killed Anthony…. and why is Zoe taking the blame?

It’s not Christmas in Walford unless someone leaves the Square in a bodybag. And this year it was Anthony Trueman who met his maker, dying after a brief encounter with Zoe at the top of the stairs in The Vic.

Waking up after being knocked unconscious by Anthony, Zoe was shocked to find that he was dead too. But who killed Anthony? Had it been her, bashing his head against a wall just before he knocked her out? Or was it Chrissie, having snuck upstairs to frame Zoe for murder?

Whoever it was, there was something peculiar about Anthony’s death, from the weird staging to the fact that he would have had to have seen his real killer coming up the stairs. And the one person who had a stone-cold alibi (you know, being unconscious at the time) is now facing a murder charge.

A murder charge that the police are choosing to proceed with in spite of their knowing full well that Anthony was struck twice, and that noted ex-con and murderess Chrissie Watts was lurking around the place on that very same night.

Make it make sense!

2. How did Chrissie meet Jasmine?

Revealing themselves as Zoe’s stalker tag team, Jasmine and Chrissie shared how they’d met in the hospital after the shooting. Realising that they had a common enemy, they then decided to join forces to make her life hell.

Somehow, Jasmine and Chrissie had managed to find each other in the hospital and then deem it appropriate to divulge their pasts to a woman they’d only just met. And then team up to spray a bit of graffiti, hide a cat under a bed, and write some mean Christmas cards.

As though poor Zoe wasn’t clearly suffering enough already, having just been shot.

None of which really answers the question how Jasmine had known that the Zoe Slater in the newspaper was her Zoe Slater.

3. What was her plan exactly?

When we last saw Chrissie Watts, it seemed as though she’d gotten her happy ending – freshly released from prison, she rode off into the sunset with Jake Moon. Fast forward a year, and now Chrissie is consumed by revenge again, and out to get Zoe.

We get it – Zoe was the only one of the three who killed Dirty Den to not face jail time. But would Chrissie really risk her newfound freedom by harassing Zoe and killing Anthony (indeed, if she did do that)?  Again, at this point in time, Zoe had literally just been shot – how much more do you even need Zoe to suffer, Chrissie?

4. When Max met Cindy

Between Chrissie’s return and the death of Anthony, the shock union of Max Branning and Cindy Beale almost flew under the radar. Both feeling rejected by their families, they crossed paths in The Albert, where Max attempted to drown his sorrows.

Playing coy by not sharing names, the pair enjoyed a sordid Christmas evening together before going their separate ways – leaving Cindy unaware that she’d just seduced her own sworn enemy, Max Branning.

This makes tonight’s confrontation all the more juicy. But does it really make sense that Max and Cindy wouldn’t know what each other look like?

“It’s pathetic that Cindy supposedly doesn’t know what Max looks like,” wrote one fan on X as last week’s scenes aired.

“I still don’t understand how I’m supposed to believe that Cindy and Max don’t know what each other look like,” said another.

A third agreed: “And max has never seen a photo of Cindy or Cindy seen one of Max.”

One suspects Max would have gone there regardless, but Cindy is clearly going to be full of regret… until it happens again, that is.
