EastEnders boss Ben Wadey has teased that the soap will be entering uncharted territory with some ‘unusual’ storylines which will make for some ‘soap firsts.’ Ben took over as Executive Producer form predecessor Chris Clenshaw earlier this year, and quickly made the role his own.

Since taking over in June, Ben has overseen the return of Zoe Slater and Max Branning, while also handling Harry’s descent into a troubling criminal underworld, and the continued extremism of young mysoginist Joel Marshall.

EastEnders boss Ben Wadey teases ‘unusual’ stories to come as soap breaks new ground

Speaking to The Radio Times at last week’s National Television Awards, Ben shared a glimpse of the soap’s future.

“We’ve got Zoe back in the show, and we’ve got Max, we’ve got so many amazing clans right now,” Ben began.

“We’re really trying to just put heartfelt stories and actually some slightly unusual territory for us – and some soap firsts – at the forefront of the show”

He added: “So I think watch this space. We’ve got some really interesting stories.”

What’s to come in EastEnders this year?

At the same event, Ben also teased what fans could expect from EastEnders this Christmas. Christmas is always the most dramatic time of the year in Walford, and it sounds as though this year will be no different.

He told The Radio Times: “This Christmas, we’re looking past, present and future, so we’ve got a lot of stuff that we’re very excited to share with the audience.”

Ben continued: “Of course, Zoe is now back in the square, and Zoe and Kat’s relationship is complicated. There are 20 years there for them to try and recover and get to know each other.”

“Zoe has a lot of secrets that she’s going to bring into the Square with her, so the Slaters are in for a whole ride this autumn.”

With Max Branning also set to make is full-time return to Walford, he will come face-to-face with Cindy Beale (‘expect fireworks,’ the Executive Producer promised), and reunite with both Zoe and his own family.

And with viewers (plus Zoe) still to learn what happened to her surviving twin, it sounds as though EastEnders has plenty of surprises still to come!
