4 huge flaws in Callum and Johnny affair reveal

There was no need for it to go down like that

All hell broke out on EastEnders this week as Phil Mitchell stumbled upon the affair between Johnny Carter and Callum Highway. This immediately sent Phil into a rage, and he attacked both Johnny and Callum for their betrayal of Ben.

The boys also succeeded in driving a wedge between Linda and Phil, who have built up a touching friendship over the last few months. Furious at her for letting Callum and Johnny carry on under her roof, Phil lashed at her too before storming off home.

The ruckus continued as Jay and Callum arrived to try and talk him down. After threatening to tell Ben about Callum’s betrayal, he told them that he’d be seeking custody of Lexi. And so battle lines were drawn between him, Callum and Jay.

A terrible situation. And one which could have quite easily been avoided with quicker thinking from Johnny and Callum.

Everything that didn’t make sense about Callum and Johnny affair reveal in EastEnders:

1. They were fully clothed, out in the open

Walking into the back of The Vic with Linda, Phil caught Callum and Johnny at it. But what did he really catch them doing?

When he arrived, Callum and Johnny were fully clothed, in one of the hallways of The Vic. They weren’t touching or kissing; they weren’t even in one of the bedrooms.

Perhaps if Callum hadn’t immediately leapt to a position of self-defence, they might not have tipped Phil off to what they’d been up to.

2. Callum and Johnny were old friends before the affair

Further to the above, it wasn’t particularly unusual or suspicious to see Johnny and Callum together. Prior to the affair, they’d always shared a close relationship, with Callum often being referred to as a close friend of the family.

They’ve gone a bit further than that in recent weeks (driving away Johnny’s boyfriend, Felix, after he caught them kissing), but it shouldn’t have been so difficult for Callum to explain that he was just visiting an old mate.

3. 64-year-old Phil vs two 30-year-olds

Last night’s episode saw the return of the ‘old’ Phil Mitchell as his violent side suddenly resurfaced. Following his stint in a mental health facility, Phil’s been a changed man – talking about his emotions more, caring for Nigel, smiling and even laughing. Only a day prior, he’d bought granddaughter Lexi tickets to see Billie Eilish.

All that changed at Phil’s discovery. Flying off the handle, he turned as red as a tomato and grabbed his son-in-law by the face. Johnny got the even worse end of the stick, being strangled by Phil until Jay and Billy managed to talk him down.

With no disrespect to Steve McFadden, who’s still an intimidating presence, he shouldn’t have been so difficult for either Johnny or Callum to shrug off. Oh well, at least it scored us actor Charlie Suff’s strangulation face.

4. Why were Jay and Billy there?

With Callum and Linda both looking on while Phil throttled Johnny (in Linda’s defence, she was probably having flashbacks to that time she watched Keanu strangle Sharon in almost the same spot), it’s a good thing Jay and Billy were on hand to calm him down.

But what were they doing there in the first place? Do Jay and Billy make a habit of wandering the corridors of The Vic when no-one’s looking?

They were likely attracted by all the shouting, but it was an odd moment regardless. Especially Billy, who just stood there like a lemon.
