1. Pat and Barry ‘return’ as Nigel’s dementia symptoms accelerate

As the residents of Walford gather for the premiere of Nigel’s film, Phil and Julie continue to argue about his future. The screening is derailed when Nigel notices the bruise on Julie’s face, and realises that he must be to blame.

Phil and Julie give chase when he flees into the night, but only upset him more when he overhears them arguing. Nigel takes shelter in the closed Queen Vic, where his dementia symptoms take hold again, and he struggles to decipher between past and present.

In his mind’s eye, he’s reunited with old faces Pat and Barry Evans. Meanwhile, Phil comes to a sudden realisation when he watches Nigel’s film.

He and Julie catch up with Nigel at The Vic and, sitting down with his friend, Phil breaks some sad news.

2. Sam’s cancer diagnosis in EastEnders spoilers

The next day, Nigel doesn’t seem to remember anything that happened at the premiere. Phil and Sam share a heart-to-heart about family, before she heads out for the day.

Kat is alarmed when she finds Sam sneaking around the back of The Vic. She accuses Sam of stalking Zoe, but stops in her tracks when Sam admits the real reason she’s there.

She has cancer, and she’s there to seek support from Zack.

3. Zoe’s Christmas shock in EastEnders spoilers

Kat is determined to show Zoe one good Christmas before breaking the (fake) news that both of her twins are dead. She and Alfie head out to Yolande’s carol service, leaving Zoe home alone.

It’s then that Zoe makes a shocking discovery – and one which will have massive repercussions for Christmas Day.

Next day, Zoe is preoccupied with thoughts of her discovery. As community dinner gets underway, the Slaters clash with another family.

Just as they defuse one argument, a dramatic situation suddenly accelerates. Desperate to protect Zoe, Kat kicks everyone out of the pub. As the situation continues to grow out of control, catastrophe strikes.

4. Max ruins Christmas

As the week begins, Max is still stewing over Linda’s revelation. Jack and Lauren manage to talk him down, only for advice from Zoe to spur him on to take drastic action.

The next day, Max tries to make things with Oscar. Seeking comfort of the liquid kind, Oscar drops another bombshell on his shocked dad.

Max is still simmering over Oscar’s news as Christmas dinner with the Beales and the Brannings gets underway. Ian and Peter manage to avert one crisis by sending Cindy away, but another arises when Max makes a scene at the dinner table.

As arguments break out between the families, several painful truths are revealed and old wounds re-opened.
