Emmerdale review: Anya's awful farewell, Kev's dramatic exit, and Robron are BACK!

We want a Lewis and Kev spin-off!
Kerry Barrett

Our Emmerdale review this week is a mix of horror and humour just like Emmerdale itself. Because there were some really shocking moments this week from Anya’s funeral to Kev’s hostage drama. But there were also some lovely scenes that warmed our hearts and made us laugh.

It was, in short, the perfect mix!

Here’s what we thought of everything that happened in our Emmerdale review.

Anya’s sad send-off

Wasn’t the Bear storyline really, really bleak this week? Anya’s awful home-made funeral was so grim and sad. Bear’s acceptance of his situation, and unwillingness to do anything about it is hard to watch. Celia is a very bad person. Ray seems to have a good side, then we remember what he’s doing and we realise he really doesn’t.

We felt really sorry for Laurel this week when she mentioned how Jai turned out not to be as nice as she’d thought, so she was hoping Ray was different. Because while Jai is, we admit, a bit of a git, Ray is downright evil. Laurel’s going to be so sad when she finds out.

Anyway, there is a bit of hope on the horizon, because the whole evil empire was shaken this week. First of all, there was the Anya stuff, which seems hopeless. Except Bear tied her bracelet on to a tree. And Ruby knew about that bracelet. Could that provide some useful evidence in the coming weeks?

Plus Dylan called the police up to the depot, meaning Ray can’t move his drugs via their lorries for a while.

We’re hoping things are beginning to fall apart for the twisted turkey farmers.

Turkey troubles

Speaking of the turkey farm, this week we wondered what input Moira actually has into the whole venture. As far as we can see, the turkeys are on Celia’s farm – which belongs to Kim Tate – she’s doing the work (well, her poor enslaved workers are doing that, but you know what we mean) and she’s selling them.

The only bit Moira seems to be doing is delivering them to the butchers. She’s not so much as popped round to check on the birds – which strikes us as a bit odd.

Come on, Moira! Open your eyes!

All about Kev

There was a lot of Kev this week and we thoroughly enjoyed all of it. In fact, there was so much, it’s hard to know where to begin. So just to recap, Nicola found out that Kev had robbed the pawn shop, and she also found out where the loot had been stashed, thanks to a bit of eavesdropping. She ‘rescued’ the bag, just as Liam was calling the police to dob Kev in. When the police went to look for the loot, it wasn’t there.

Nicola gave it back to Kev in return for him not telling Lewis the truth about him being his dad. Still with us?

Kev agreed, but he also knew the truth about Robert and Aaron by this point, and the whole thing came to a head with him holding Robron and Liam hostage with a sword, slashing Robert’s arm with that sword, and then doing a runner.

It was a lot.

It was also brilliant. A proper soapy mix of tension and humour. We love Nicola being back scheming and plotting in a low-stakes kind of way. It’s what she’s good at and it’s great to see. We also love her being so protective of Lewis.

Robron back to their best

Another thing we really loved this week was the return of Robron at their best. Their relationship is so good when they’re just being themselves, bouncing off one another, making plans (usually illegal) and working as a team. Aaron being so unafraid of Kev really worked well, and it was generally just a great episode.

We are concerned that both Robert and Aaron now have murderous ex-husbands lurking in the background, though. Could it be shaping up to be a very dramatic Christmas in Emmerdale?

Lewis and Kev

The other thing we loved this week was the little connection between Lewis and Kev. We are putting it out there now that we would like an Emmerdale spin-off with Lewis and Kev on a road trip somewhere, getting to know each other.

Make it happen, Emmerdale writers. Please and thank you.

Remembering Donna

Rhona and April shared a heart-to-heart this week, whcih was quite cute. We like their relationship, even though April clearly doesn’t value it one tiny bit.

But we can’t help thinking that Rhona lied about her memories of Donna when she told April her mum would be proud of her. Because we also remember Donna. Donna who always did the right thing, even when it was hard. Who had a fierce sense of right and wrong. And who took huge risks in order to make sure the baddies always got caught.

So we feel quite certain that Donna would not be proud of April. She’d sympathise of course and we’re sure she’d do everything she could to help her. But proud? definitely not.
