Charity is pregnant in Emmerdale

When Sarah expressed her dream of being a mother, grandmother Charity Dingle offered to be a surrogate.

Following an embryo transfer, Charity had a fall. She then experienced bleeding and believed she’d miscarried. This theory was further backed up by a negative pregnancy test.

Cain Dingle offered Sarah money to pay for a second embryo transfer. However, at the clinic they were shocked to learn that Charity was already pregnant.

As Charity sat in shocked and confused silence, the doctor reassured them that all was well. Sarah soon remarked that this was the happiest day of her life.

At the pub, Sarah gathered the family to announce the news. However, she was oblivious to her nan’s concern. The reason for Charity worried expression was soon revealed via flashback scenes confirming she recently slept with Ross Barton.

Is Ross the father of Charity’s baby?

In the toilet of the Woolpack, Vanessa spoke to Charity about their recent indiscretion, telling her: “It was barely a kiss. Blink, and you’d miss it. Just be grateful you’ve got nothing to actually regret.”

As Vanessa walked away, it became apparent that Charity did in fact have something to regret. Meanwhile, back in the bar, Ross walked in and discovered Charity’s pregnancy news.

We then saw a flashback to last week. After Charity leaned into a kiss with Vanessa, Vanessa chucked her out of her house insisting she wouldn’t be a fall back option.

Charity then saw Ross drinking in the village. After accepting some of the alcohol, she kissed him before leading him away. Back in the present day, Ross demanded to know if Charity’s baby was his.

Ross was suspicious and called it “a bit of a coincidence”. Charity told Ross that her pregnancy is definitely a result of the embryo transfer and nothing to do with him. But Ross wasn’t convinced.

Charity then lied to Ross that she’d spoken to the doctor about having sex and had been reassured that there is “not a cat in hell’s chance” of the baby being anything to do with Ross.

Back at the bar, Ross continued to suspect that something is up and made sarcastic comments about Charity being a good person. Awkwardly, Mack then stood up and made a speech about his “amazing” wife.

As Ross glared at Charity, could he be right? Is Charity carrying his baby?

Michael Parr and Emma Atkins speak out

Speaking about the twist, Michael Parr who plays Ross, said: “He doesn’t believe [Charity]. I think he’s desperate to find out the answer because it comes with such responsibility, having another child, it’s a lot of pressure on him because he’s not doing so well with work right now and his living situation isn’t ideal as he’s always swapping and changing.”

He added: “Ross is like a dog with a bone, he’s not going to let this lie and won’t be fobbed off by Charity trying to baffle him with science.

“He knows Charity too well and he saw her face in the pub when everyone was excited and celebrating.  Her expression said it all and he clocked it.  He knows she either knows or she’s in doubt and he’s going to keep going until he gets the truth.”

Emma Atkins, who plays Charity, also had her say on the latest development. She said: “I think it is just a jaw dropping moment for those that have followed the storyline. Because it just ups the stakes with everything.

“Sarah’s just got this desperate need to be a mum, Charity’s so desperate to please Sarah in that, she feels her vocation is being this vessel to carry this child. There’s so much at stake for them and the audience finding this out, is just that amazing moment. It’s a good soap moment, a gift.”

Emma added: “There are just so many layers to this story. So Charity had thought she had closed the door on having another child and that prospect killed Mackenzie in many ways – she was aware of that so Charity now holds all that guilt.

“She’s stuck in this hellhole of what do I do next and who do I turn to and it’s cataclysmic holding in that kind of secret. Surely at some point she’s definitely going to implode.”
