Kin series 3 finally confirmed after three year absence and it will be the 'darkest and most compelling chapter yet'

Kin series 3 is the drama we’ve all been waiting for, and RTÉ One has just delivered the brilliant news that it’s in the works.
Easily one of the most hotly-anticipated returns of the past decade, the Irish crime drama will be back for its “darkest and most compelling chapter yet”.
After three years of feverish speculation, with many believing it would never return, RTE have finally confirmed popular crime drama Kin will return to our screens.
Here’s everything we know about the return of the fictional Kinsella family in Kin series 3.
Is there a Kin series 3?
RTÉ and the BBC has joined forces to bring the Kinsellas back to the screen for a third – and possibly final – season.
The future of the Irish gangster crime drama had looked uncertain ever since series 2 aired in 2023. This was largely due to the bust work schedules of the cast, particularly Marvel star Charlie Cox.
Further fears came when Canadian film company Bron, who financed the show, went into bankruptcy leaving the assets of Kin for sale. But, now RTÉ One has finally announced that Kin will be returning for a series 3.
An RTÉ insider told The Irish Sun: “It’s very rare that you get a TV show everyone wants to bring back, but that show is Kin. The involvement of the BBC isn’t that surprising because Kin has done phenomenally well in the UK. To the extent that the BBC tried to make their own version. If you look at This City is Ours, about a gangster family based in Liverpool, it’s clearly a nod to Kin.”
Kin series 1 and 2 previously aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer after its debut on RTÉ One. Series 1 was released in 2021, with series 2 following in 2023.
What is the plot?
The synopsis for the new series says: “Kin series 3 reunites the nation with the Kinsella crime family. As they consolidate power, buried betrayals and festering rivalries turn inward, and the greatest threat to the family empire becomes the family itself.”
The first two series of Kin ended with the deaths of several key characters. At the end of series 2, Aidan Gillen’s Frank shot dead his brother Bren, played by Francis Magee, before turning the gun on himself. Amanda Kinsella subsequently took over the family operation.
RTÉ has teased: “As buried betrayals resurface and internal rivalries intensify, the new series promises the darkest and most compelling chapter yet of the Kinsella story.”
How many episodes is it?
Series 1 and 2 of Kin were both eight episodes. So we can hope that series 3 will be the same.
Anything less and we will riot.
Who is in the cast of Kin series 3?
The main cast of Kin, at least those who survived series 1 and 2, are set to return. These include Charlie Cox, Clare Dunne, Sam Keeley and Maria Doyle Kennedy. Of course, Charlie is now a huge name in the States, and currently leads the cast of Daredevil: Born Again. His popularity was one of the main reasons why a series 3 of Kin was ever in doubt.
According to The Irish Sun: “Charlie had a window this summer to come back and shoot Kin in Dublin. It’s a sign of how good the writing is and how much the cast rate the show that they are all willing to come back and work on the show again in Dublin.”
Past favourites Aidan Gillen, Francis Magee, and Ciaran Hinds will, of course, not be returning after their characters met bloody ends in series 1 and 2.
Unforgotten star Emmett J. Scanlan, aka Jimmy Kinsella, will also be back. He confirmed the news on his Instagram account.
When’s the start date?
Reports say the cast and crew or Kin series 3 will begin filming in Dublin in a matter of weeks.
That means we could reasonably expect it to land on our screens as early as spring 2027.
An insider said: “Kin could run and run. Now it’s been saved by RTÉ and the BBC it has the potential to be The Irish Sopranos, which ran for six seasons on HBO.”
