The Forsytes will return for a series 3, and this time the family will leave 19th century London and head to the Mediterranean coast. Lucky for some!

The news comes just days after series 2 landed on Channel5.com with no fanfare, and no linear transmission date.

But we can now reveal that the cast and crew are currently filming a new series, and there’s yet more new faces joining the period drama.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Forsytes series 3, including plot, cast, and possible start date.

Is there a series 3 of The Forsytes?

A series 3 of The Forsytes has now been confirmed, and cast and crew are currently filming the new episodes.

Masterpiece’s PBS hit series has begun production, with the episode written by Debbie Horsfield. The Eccles-born writer created the series for TV, and has penned all episodes so far.

She’s also known for Poldark, and The Riff Raff Element, so she is rather partial to a period drama!

She said: “It’s been an absolute treat to take the Forsytes on a roller-coaster ride of intrigue, glamour, romantic encounters and shock revelations, all played out against the sun-drenched Mediterranean at the height of the Belle Époque. We hope audiences will enjoy watching our characters bask in the pleasures of the Riviera whilst grappling with the curve balls which fate inevitably throws their way.”

What is the plot?

The third season of The Forsytes will see the family on holiday in the French Riviera.

The wealthy family attempt to get some rest and relaxation in the glamorous French Riviera. But they soon realise that they can’t escape their family drama…

The casino, the beach and a luxurious hotel are all settings for this third chapter in Debbie Horsfield’s reimagining of John Galsworthy’s The Forsyte Saga novels.

Susanne Simpson, Head of Scripted Content and Executive Producer for MASTERPIECE, said: “I am thrilled with the audience reaction to our lavish costume drama, The Forsytes. And pleased that fans can look forward to a second, and now a third season. Debbie Horsfield has done it again with scripts that will leave audiences wanting more.”

Who’s new in the cast?

Meanwhile, London-born Gregg Sulkin has appeared in The Six Triple Eight, World on Fire, and Runaways.

They will join the returning cast members from series 1 and 2, including Francesca Annis as formidable matriarch Ann. Stephen Moyer returns as Ann’s eldest son Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co.

Danny Griffin plays his bohemian son Jo, while Tuppence Middleton is his status-driven wife Frances. Eleanor Tomlinson plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love.

Jack Davenport  plays Ann’s competitive younger son James, while Joshua Orpin stars as James’ shrewd son Soames. Millie Gibson  stars as his love interest.

Eleanor Jackson, Naomi Frederick, Justine Moore, Owen Igiehon and Tom Durant Pritchard also star.

How many episodes is The Forsytes series 3?

According to Deadline, The Forsytes series 3 will only be three episodes.

This is in contrast to series 1 and 2, which were both six episodes each.

Where is The Forsytes series 3 set?

Series 3 of the period drama The Forsytes will be set in the French Riviera. Which is quite the change from the usual London society (via Bristol where it’s really filmed).

Damien Timmer, CCO & Founder of Mammoth Screen; said: “Having made two series set during the London season, it’s a real delight to follow the Forsyte family on their summer vacation!

“It’s a grand tour that takes in Paris, the Italian countryside and the glamorous world of the French Riviera. Love is lost and found, new relationships are formed and incendiary secrets are unearthed – the family will never be the same again!”
