All the original Malcolm In The Middle cast members returning for Life's Still Unfair and why Dewey has been recast
You're not the boss of me, now! But they are still big
Malcolm In The Middle is back and just as chaotic as ever with revival Life’s Still Unfair promising utter chaos.
The new four-part series on Disney+ sees Malcolm all grown up, and desperate to avoid his family by any means necessary.
But when you have a pushy mother like Lois, you know that’s easier said than done.
With her 40th anniversary to Hank around the corner, she is set on making everything perfect. And that includes having Malcolm there whether he wants to be or not.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Malcolm In The Middle cast bringing the new story of Life’s Still Unfair to life – the old, the new and the replaced.

Which Malcolm In The Middle stars are returning for the Life’s Still Unfair revival?
Malcolm In The Middle captures chaotic family dynamics better than most other sitcoms.
That’s largely down to the iconic cast, many of whom made their name on the series.
Luckily, nearly everyone agreed to make their return into this dysfunctional family fold (although we still don’t know their last name).

There is one notable exception, but we’ll get there.
Here are all the familiar faces making a comeback, and what they’ve been doing since the show was last on screen.

Frankie Muniz as Malcolm
Malcolm In The Middle just wouldn’t be the same without Malcolm himself – so of course Frankie Muniz is back.
In present day, Malcolm is more tightly-wound than ever. He’s leading a successful charity, with a girlfriend and a daughter… but nothing gets under his skin quite like his family.
So Malcolm has been avoiding them at all costs, using his busy job as a cover to not see them.
Since appearing on the original series, Muniz (now 40) is a man of many talents. As well as acting in a string of episodes of beloved shows including Criminal Minds, The Rookie and New Amsterdam, he’s also found a new passion as a stock car racer.
In 2017, he competed on Dancing With The Stars (the US version of Strictly), coming in third place that series.
He participated in I’m A Celebrity Australia in 2024, but walked out after three weeks due to missing his wife and young son.

Jane Kaczmarek as Lois
Lois is the matriarch of the family, and continues to be as neurotic as ever.
With a party to plan, she rallies the family like a troop leader – but underneath it all she is a very devoted parent who just wants the best for her kids.
Her role in Malcolm in the Middle secured actress Jane Kaczmarek seven Primetime Emmy nods and three Golden Globe nominations.
Since her time on the show, Jane gave her voice to Judge Constance Harm in The Simpsons, starred in legal drama Raising The Bar, and returned to sitcoms in Playing House.
Other credits include episodes of The Big Bang Theory, This Is Us and Mixed-ish.

Bryan Cranston as Hal
Out of the entire Malcolm In The Middle gang, Bryan Cranston is undoubtedly the name you’ll remember.
After playing the hapless but devoted Hal, he turned into a cruel and meticulous meth dealer in smash-hit series, Breaking Bad.
His role of Walter White in the series earned him four Primetime Emmy wins for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Other credits include Your Honor, How I Met Your Mother, Godzilla and The Studio.
Cranston is also an actor of stage as well as screen, earning two Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Play for his performances in All The Way and Network, respectively.
And if that’s not enough, he now also runs a Mezcal company, Dos Hombres, with his former Breaking Bad co-star Aaron Paul.

Christopher Masterson as Francis
In the original series, Francis was the rebel child, landing in military school as a result. He later absconded to Alaska where he met, fell in love and eloped with his wife, Piama (played by Emy Coligado, who is also returning).
In Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, Francis is far more settled – though is living temporarily in Hal and Lois’s garage while visiting for the anniversary party.
He constantly feels like he’s the most disliked child, and will do anything to get in his parents good books.
Since the original series, Masterson continued to act. He also now works as a DJ.
His credits include episodes of That 70s Show, The Wild Thornberrys, White Collar and Haven.

Justin Berfield as Reese
Reese is someone whose spontaneous nature often gets him into trouble.
Despite it being 20 years since he was last on our screens, that’s not changed much. He still very much relies on Hal and Lois to bail him out of a situation when they inevitably go wrong.
Unlike his co-stars, Justin has not acted since Malcolm In The Middle, just returning to the screen for the revival.
He tried his hand behind the camera, becoming a producer and executive producer on shows including Sons of Tucson, Blonde Ambition and Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules.
After marrying his wife in 2017, he spent time in Denver, Colorado. On the Joe Vulpis Podcast, he said he “spent a lot of time fly-fishing” there.
He now raises his two children with wife, Liza Almeida.
New Dewey actor in Life’s Still Unfair and why original star Erik Per Sullivan was replaced
As well as the returning cast, there are some new additions into their world. As well as one, very prominent, replacement.
Erik Per Sullivan, the original Dewey, opted not to return for the revival. He hasn’t acted since 2006.
Little is known about him since his time on the show – only that he has decided to leave acting to pursue his studies.
Speaking on the Fly On The Wall podcast in June 2025, Bryan Cranston confirmed: “[Erik’s] actually going to Harvard. He’s really, really smart, and he’s getting his master’s at Harvard right now.
“He said [about returning], ‘Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was nine or something. So I’m not into it.'”

Who are the other new cast members joining Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair?
Caleb Ellsworth-Clark as Dewey
In Sullivan’s absence, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark is taking on the role of the now-adult musical protégé.
The actor has been working since 2013, and has appeared in films including The Silencing, Spiral, Nightmare Alley and The Thicket.
TV credits include episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale, Wynonna Earp, Fargo and Joe Pickett.
As well as Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, Caleb is also set to appear on our screens in the upcoming season of My Life With The Walter Boys, and TV Mini Series Unspeakable: The Murder of Jon Benét Ramsey alongside Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen.
He keeps off social media, last updating his Instagram in 2020.

Keeley Karsten as Leah, Malcolm’s teenage daughter
Yes, Malcolm has his own daughter now! And she’s a teenager! Feel old yet?
Leah takes after her dad in a lot of ways. For starters, she’s just as smart as him, though that doesn’t sit well among her peers in the prestigious school she’s in.
She’s also keen to form a better relationship with the extended family.
At 15, Keeley already has an impressive list of credits to her name. This includes Nazi-hunting series Hunters alongside Al Pacino, and Steven Speilberg’s Oscar-nominated movie, The Fablemans.

Vaughan Murrae as Kelly, Lois and Hal’s youngest child
In the original Malcolm In The Middle series finale, Lois revealed she was pregnant with her sixth child by showing Hal a positive pregnancy test.
Now 15 years later, we meet Kelly – the non-binary, youngest child of the family.
Kelly is someone who is already a lot more level-headed than their siblings. That doesn’t stop them from drawing Kelly into some of their shenanigans every now and again though!
Like their character, Murrae also identifies as non-binary. They started their career as a model before finding their feet as an actor.
Since then, they led the cast in movie Before I Change My Mind, and appeared in TV series The Solutioneers, as well as Hallmark series The Way Home alongside Andie Macdowell.

Kiana Madeira as Tristan, Malcolm’s girlfriend
Canadian actress Kiana plays Malcolm’s beautiful new girlfriend Tristan in Life’s Still Unfair.
Tristan is bubbly and totally in love with Malcolm – though she’s yet to meet the rest of the family. In the trailer, she encourages him to make peace with them in time for Hal and Lois’s anniversary.
Kiana’s previous credits include R.L Stine’s Fear Street trilogy, Netflix’s Trinkets, and TV series, My Adventures with Superman.
She also starred in the After… films, a romantic drama series that started life as One Direction (specifically Harry Styles) fan-fiction.
Later this year, she’ll show off her MMA skills by playing Rhiannon Mitchell in movie, Baby Love.
