In today’s Coronation Street ITVX early release (Thursday, January 29), a fan-favourite tried to cope with their grief by turning to the bottle and to drugs.

After getting drink with the girls, Bernie didn’t want the party to stop and headed to the Chariot Square Hotel to continue the fun.

It was there that she met a guy called Mal who just so happened to be Roy’s date Alice’s husband

Bernie drowned her grief

Tonight, Bernie Winter told Dev that she was going out for drinks with the girls. She’d lost both her son and her son-in-law and was struggling to cope.

She then headed out for drinks with her mates at the Rovers, but she soon got into a slight tense exchange with Maggie who thought she’d had enough to drink.

Continuing the party by herself, she then headed over to the hotel for more drinks. Bumping into a guy called Mal, Bernie learned all about his wife Alice’s affair before telling him about Paul and Billy’s deaths.

The pair then started to blast some tunes, getting sent packing by a frustrated Ryan.

But, that wasn’t the end of the night. Mal invited Bernie back to his hotel room to bleed the mini-bar dry.

Drug nightmare for Bernie after night with Mal in Coronation Street

Having a great time with her new pal, Mal, Bernie then stepped things up a gear by adding drugs into the mix. Conversations got deep, and before Bernie knew it, Mal was going in for a kiss. Bernie brushed it off and told him that she was married though.

By the time Ryan came knocking on the door, it was 2am. He’d received some noise complaints and wanted Bernie to pull herself together before Debbie clocked on at 7am.

Bernie was aware how it all looked and told Ryan that nothing had happened between her and Mal. But, he assured her that Dev wouldn’t see it that way.

She then headed off, with the end of the episode then showing her unconscious and slumped down in a toilet cubicle as a group of girls discovered her in a bad way.

But, will Bernie come back around? And, can she find a healthier way to get through her grief?
