EastEnders star Heather Peace has opened up about her immediate reaction to her cancer diagnosis – revealing her fear that she might die before she could complete Eve Unwin’s story on the soap.

Heather, 50, was diagnosed with breast cancer last October. She went on to have a mastectomy on her left breast, as well as reconstruction.

She continued to film her scenes on the soap throughout.

Heather Peace reveals fear she would die following cancer diagnosis

Speaking on Gaby Roslin’s podcast, Heather revealed her decision to return to work in spite of her cancer news.

“I said ‘I need to come in’ because at this point I don’t know what’s going to happen,” she said.

These scenes came in the midst of Eve‘s wedding to Suki Panesar – including those in which she was poisoned by Suki’s evil ex, Nish.

“And I want to finish this arc of the story. Not coming in for the next two weeks is not going to change anything, but at least let me put the full stop on a story that’s been playing out for nearly two and a half years,” Heather continued.

“If we get to the end of that and we see them get married and we see them successful, if beyond that it’s a mess, I can leave and feel like I’ve put a full stop on something.”

Heather Peace reveals upsetting update

Earlier this month, Heather shared that doctors also diagnosed partner Ellie Dickinson with breast cancer. This came only a few months before Heather’s own diagnosis.

She told The Mirror: “Her breast cancer was a smaller, aggressive lump, so she had a lumpectomy and then radiotherapy. Of course then I come along with my 12 cm lump, absolutely ginormous, and mastectomy, chemotherapy, just about to go into radiotherapy.”

“She’s like ‘Even that you have to do bigger.’ It’s like ‘Hold my beer.’”

In June, Heather shared the news that she’d ‘picked up her medal’ and could see ‘the finish line’ of her cancer journey.

“Since then I’ve undergone surgery and recovery over the Christmas period and today my chemotherapy journey ended,” she wrote on Instagram, after sharing an image of her wig fitting after starting to lose her hair to chemotheraphy.

“I woke up this morning and it was like the end of the London Marathon. I’d turned onto The Mall and could see the giant clock & the finish line,” she added.
