But as he struggled to settle in, the enormity of what was happening weighed heavily on his loved ones. The very special standalone episode saw Julie and Phil realise Clare and Lexi had taken Nigel back to the Square in a taxi without telling them. As Julie panicked about Nigel’s safety, Clare realised that she couldn’t cope with Nigel, especially as he still didn’t recognise who she was. Luckily, Lexi was on hand to soothe Nigel, and the pair got him home to Walford in one piece. Lexi had messaged on the community group chat and gathered all Nigel’s friends for a farewell party in The Vic, so everyone was gathered outside the pub when his taxi arrived. Nigel got a hero’s welcome home (Credit: BBC) Nigel went to The Vic for the last time in EastEnders Nigel seemed overwhelmed by all the fuss, and as everyone recalled their funniest Nigel memories in The Vic, he couldn’t remember much and struggled to follow the conversations. It was only after they had a heart-to-heart in the pub toilets that Julie finally softened towards Clare and realised just how much Nigel’s not recognising her was hurting. Trying to make amends, Julie talked to Nigel, reminding him of when he used to take Clare swimming on a Saturday morning. She talked about how they’d buy doughnuts on the way home and there was a flicker of recognition for Nigel as Julie relayed her story. For a brief minute, Nigel finally remembered who Clare was, and they shared a lovely moment at last. However, once there, Nigel struggled to settle. He lashed out at the nurses, shouted at Phil and hit Clare, leaving her with a bleeding lip and a broken heart. The enormity of what was happening hit Clare and Phil. Struggling to cope, Clare left and told Phil she would visit, while Phil broke down. Phil opened up to the nurse that this wasn’t how things should be for his best friend and that Nigel deserved better. When he admitted that he couldn’t cope seeing Nigel like this anymore, the nurse suggested he had carer burnout and that it was common. She suggested he had a bit of time off while Nigel settled into the home, and Phil was devastated. Knowing the time had come to say goodbye, Phil went to see Nigel, who was in his room, sleeping. Phil told his best friend that he loved him very much, but that he couldn’t look after him anymore, and held his hand in a silent farewell. He tries to distance himself from what is happening by refusing to visit and takes Sam to her radiotherapy session to look busy. Even when Lexi asks her grandad to take her to see Nigel, Phil still won’t budge. However, Lexi and Nigel finally get their reunion when Julie and Callum agree to take her to the care home instead. But, Lexi isn’t coping as well as everyone thinks, and she is soon avoiding school because she misses Nigel. Will she be okay? What else happened in Eastenders tonight? While Phil and Clare took Nigel to the care home, Julie was at home struggling with the enormity of everything. Yolande supported Julie in her moment of need As she packed the final bits for Nigel to take with him to the home, the reality of what was happening hit Julie. She broke down, knowing that this new chapter was going to be the hardest yet. Yolande arrived to support her friend, and Julie admitted that she didn't want Nigel to move, even though the husband she knew and loved had already gone because of his dementia. Julie told Yolande that she knew she had to carry on and visit the man in the care home who looked like her husband. Yolande promised that everyone on the Square would do their bit and revealed she had already created a group chat to organise when everyone would visit Nigel.
