What happened in EastEnders tonight: Lauren lied to the police as Howie tried to blackmail Oscar

Howie issued an ultimatum

Lauren Branning gave brother Oscar a false alibi in EastEnders tonight (Wednesday, August 6), getting him off the hook for his attack on Patrick. Won over by his (sincere) sob story, Lauren felt sympathetic, and lied to the police as they conducted a door-to-door search.

However, they weren’t in the clear just yet. Howie had figured out that Oscar had been responsible for the robbery, and set a terrible ultimatum. Lauren rejected his attempt at blackmail, but how far is Howie prepared to go?

Meanwhile, disgusted Ross destroyed Joel’s laptop after making a horrifying discovery, and Elaine and Cindy struck up a working partnership at The Albert.

Lauren lied to the police on EastEnders tonight

Lauren was horrified to learn what Oscar had done. He planned to run away from the situation by going to stay with his nan, but Lauren encouraged him to stay and face the consequences. As he panicked that he’d killed poor old Patrick, he filled Lauren in on how bad he’d had it with Tanya as a child.

Their mum had completely fallen apart after Abi’s death, he shared, leaving him alone and miserable with a woman who was completely unable to cope. Just then, the police arrived as part of their Square-wide door-to-door.

Oscar’s unhappy upbringing weighing heavy on her mind, Lauren chose to lie, telling officers that her brother had been home all night. Now all that remained was the money, which she insisted would have to be returned.

Howie tried to blackmail Lauren and Oscar

At the hospital, the police arrived to take Howie’s witness statement. He told both Kim and the police that he’d not seen anything that could identify Patrick’s assailant.

Well, not entirely nothing – remembering Oscar’s ankle tag, Howie settled on a plan. Making his excuses, he left the hospital and headed home. Meanwhile, a relieved Yolande, Denise and Kim learned that Patrick was going to be fine. The man of the hour seemed like he was on fine form, even if he had no memory of the attack.

Back by her fiancée’s side, Yolande proposed again.

Having returned to Albert Square, Howie paid a visit to Oscar and Lauren. Telling Oscar that he’d spotted his ankle tag, he accused him of being behind the attack, and demanded the money back.

But Lauren had Howie sussed. Realising that he wanted the money all for himself, she called his bluff, rejecting Howie’s attempt at blackmail.

But how far is Howie prepared to go?

Angry Ross confronts Joel on EastEnders

Ross was disgusted by Joel on EastEnders tonight

Back home after Joel’s outburst against Kat, Ross continued to make excuses. As Ross tried to get through to his son, Joel turned the tables, parroting back all his favourite lines from the Andrew Tate – sorry, Drake Zagan – playbook. Minus the human trafficking charges of course, which are more Ben Mitchell’s thing.

Rather than tell his son to stop watching idiots online, Ross instead gifted his son a beer and settled down to watch some of Joel’s favourite videos. Unaware of what he was really watching, Ross was bemused, brushing off the influencer’s words as harmless banter.

As Joel went to fetch another beer, Ross continued to watch alone. As he listened to Drake describe women – all women – as ‘sex workers,’ Ross’s face paled. But worse was still to come. A notification arrived with an e-mail for Joel. This contained a link to a very different kind of video.

Joel had been swapping videos with other like-minded lads online; recordings of women in changing rooms, on public transport and in the street, all without consent. The upskirting was just the tip of the iceberg though, and Joel informed his dad that he had a collection of much more explicit stuff.

Seeing red, Ross grabbed the laptop. Describing his son as a ‘pervert,’ he dumped it in the sink, turning the tap on. As Joel burst into tears, Ross raged on. A part of the lad clearly felt some shame over his mixed-up attitude, but neither he nor Ross have the emotional range to address that.

As Joel sat up into the early hours with his soggy laptop, Vicki joined him in the kitchen. She informed him that she’d smoothed things over with Kat, and that a simple apology in the morning would put his friendship with Tommy back on track.

Cindy and Elaine joined forces

It was a busy shift at The Albert, and Freddie took the opportunity to leave her in the lurch. Lurking nearby, Elaine spotted an opportunity, and agreed to step in for triple pay. In spite of Elaine spending the whole shift talking to Callum, Cindy had a proposal.

She offered Elaine the job of co-manager, which she accepted. Well, anything’s preferable to watching them bicker over George.

Let the fireworks ensue.

Callum looks thoughtful on EastEnders

Also on EastEnders tonight

Callum shared a drink with a man from work at The Albert. He was more interested in news from Elaine, though, who shared an update on how Johnny was doing on the cruise. You know, the singles cruise. The one he’s on with his mother. And his little brother and sister.

Do Callum’s feelings for Johnny still linger?
