What happened in EastEnders tonight: Phil was devastated as Nigel returned to Scotland with Julie

Nigel reunited with his wife

Julie Bates returned to Walford in EastEnders tonight (Tuesday, July 15), set on bringing husband Nigel home. She immediately clashed with Phil, who was terrified at the prospect of losing his friend and safety net.

How will Phil cope as Nigel returns to Scotland with Julie?

Elsewhere, Oscar set the cat among the pigeons as he made himself at home; fighting with Ian and getting drunk on The Vic. However, some advice from Jack and not-so-subtle manipulation from Penny seemed to put him on the right track. Can Oscar make a go of things on the fruit and veg stall?

Meanwhile, a made-up scratch card win for Stacey jeaopardised Ian’s plans for The Vic, and Harry moved in with Kojo and George. And, as Callum grew jealous of Johnny’s one-night stand, the pair fell into each other’s arms again.

Julie arrived in Walford in EastEnders tonight

Following Jay’s call, Julie arrived in Walford in search of her husband. Meeting up with Jay, she soon got the answers she’d been searching for, finding out all about Nigel’s dementia.

Outside, on the market, she finally came face-to-face with her husband again, on his way to the cinema with Phil. He hadn’t a clue who she was – and grew confused as Phil and Julie immediately started arguing.

Back home, Julie reminded Nigel of their life back in Scotland, showing him a series of pictures of their home, their cat and their hens. As he stormed off upset, Phil took the opportunity to stick the oar in for her turning up uninvited; she hit back by telling him that she should have been told months ago.

Begging for the arguing to end, Nigel asked Julie to leave. Which she did, upset. Once she’d gone, Nigel felt regretful, and asked Phil to go after Julie with an apology.

Phil found Julie out on the Square with a cup of tea, and the pair managed to have a civil conversation. Hoping to provide clarity, Phil left her with Nigel’s videos, explaining his decision to leave.

Back home, after a good cry, Julie sat with Nigel and reassured him that he’d never be a burden. She confirmed that she was no longer in touch with Clare, but was still in touch with her own son, Josh (Jon from S Club 7!).

As Nigel rested on the sofa, Julie dropped her next bombshell, telling a horrified Phil that she was taking him back home to Scotland… tomorrow.

Julie took Nigel back to Scotland in EastEnders tonight

The next day, Julie was keen to follow through on her plans for Nigel. As for the man himself, he was caught in the middle while she and Phil began a tug-of-war, each playing emotional blackmail with his memories.

Later, Julie shared her concerns with Jay. She feared that maybe Phil was the best person for Nigel. However, Jay shared his worry that Phil had taken on more than he could handle, revealing his recent struggles with his mental health.

She returned home to find Phil whispering in Nigel’s ear. Nigel exploded as another argument broke out between Phil and Julie, storming out of the house. By the time they caught up with him, he’d grown confused again, and had no memory of Julie.

Back home, reassured by Julie’s patience, and words of calm, Nigel agreed to return to Scotland. In the kitchen, Julie and Phil swapped notes on Nigel’s care. Outside, on the Square, Nigel bid farewell to his friends… except Phil, who couldn’t bring himself to say goodbye.

Linda found Phil inside, solemnly coming to terms with another loss. She begged Phil to tell Nigel how much he meant to him, but he was having none of it. And, as Nigel and Julie climbed into the back of a taxi together, it all went unsaid.

Oscar fought with Ian

Oscar was already making himself at home, letting Peter and Lauren cop an eyeful as he lounged around in a state of undress. The social’s visit due, Lauren packed him off for the day. Out on the Square, he was taking another menacing call from Fat Mike when he clashed with Brian Ian, and his many snide comments.

Later, a concerned Jack bonded with Oscar in McKlunky’s, where he questioned his nephew on his sexuality (“both ways, innit”) and when he’d last seen his dad (Christmas 2022). Realising that the lad was sorely missing a father figure, Jack promised to look out for his nephew.

Back home, the social worker had arrived. She soon honed in on the cigarettes on the table, and confirmed that she knew Oscar was staying there. She was concerned that the undue stress might trigger a relapse.

Meanwhile, at the chippy, Oscar attempted to apologise to Ian. Ian was having none of it, though, and rejected Oscar’s olive branch. Big mistake: as Ian pottered around in the back, Oscar staged a fall, to the bemusement of Stacey. Stacey, who couldn’t help but feel she recognised Oscar from somewhere…

As Ian and Jack fussed over ‘injured’ Oscar, the penny dropped. Stacey realised exactly who Oscar was. And vice versa. He’d heard all about her and her sordid history with Branning men.

After defusing the situation by paying off Oscar, Ian was furious to see the lad outside, counting his cash with a magically healed arm. Demanding his money back, 56-year-old Ian got into a scuffle with a 17-year-old boy… just as the social arrived to see Oscar throw the older man to the ground.

Oscar found a new direction

The next day, with Oscar making the house look untidy, Lauren gave her dad a call. Having had enough, she left a message, begging Max to call her back. Jack confirmed he’d not heard from Max either, who shared some words of advice on ‘parenting’ teenagers.

Reasoning that Oscar was bored, she found Peter and mooted putting him to work on the fruit and veg stall. In the kitchen, Oscar had just gotten another threatening text from Fat Mike when Lauren returned home.

After raging at him for slobbing about the house all day, Lauren set an ultimatum. Start work on the stall, or clear off. But first, a drink. After scoring himself a drink at The Vic, he met up with Penny, who challenged him to a drinking competition. The stakes? If Oscar loses, he starts work on the stall.

Back home, Peter and Lauren were horrified to find a drunken Penny and Oscar in the kitchen. Having lost their wager, he’d be starting his first day on the stall tomorrow.

Ian made plans

Ian informed Kathy and Harvey of his plans to rebuild the Beale empire. With Linda putting The Vic up for auction, he was interested in throwing his name into the hat. As he examined his future purchase, Ian was accosted by Jean, Kat and Stacey, who laughed in the face of his ambitions.

Jean was horrified at the prospect of Ian Beale running The Vic – with Kathy and Harvey propping up the bar?! – and a plan was formulated. As Ian sniffed around – informing Linda he was having Beale’s Eel’s valuated – Stacey rushed in, telling her family she’d just won £100k on a scratch card.

As a jealous Ian stewed at the bar, Kat revealed the Slaters’ own plan to bid for The Vic. It was all a lie, of course, intended to put Ian off buying the pub… but have they just made him even more determined?

George worried as Harry moved in

In the chippy, Kojo overheard Harry talking about his (lack of) living situation. Harry was overjoyed when Kojo offered to help out, lending his sofa to his best mate. How sweet.

George was less thrilled with the arrangement, entering the flat to find Harry in their home. Later, in The Vic, George questioned Harry’s suitability as a housemate.

Will Kojo heed George’s concerns?

Also in EastEnders tonight: Jealous Callum hooked up with Johnny… again

In The Vic, Callum felt a pang of jealousy at overhearing of a one-night stand Johnny’d just had. Pulling up a pew, Johnny rubbed it in. Later, the pair caught up, and Johnny assured Callum that he hadn’t been trying to make him jealous.

Once again Callum reiterated that they were just good mates. And, once again, they fell into a passionate embrace.
