What happened in EastEnders tonight: Raging Phil returned and Stacey hit the jackpot

Angry Phil's back
Joel Harley

It was the return of violent Phil Mitchell in EastEnders tonight (Wednesday, July 16) as he attacked Johnny and Callum after learning of their affair. Already upset over losing Nigel, Phil lashed out at those around him, taking it out on Callum.

Well-meaning Jay attempted to defuse the situation, but only made matters worse. Can the Mitchells reconcile their differences before it’s too late?

Elsewhere, Stacey had some surprising news after a visit from Martin’s life insurance company. And, as Oscar began work on the market, he began to show a different side to his rambunctious personality. Meanwhile, Ravi made plans for the future as Phil sniffed around The Arches.

Phil struggled without Nigel in EastEnders tonight

With a big Nigel-shaped void in his life, Phil awoke to an empty house. In a huff, he pulled the pictures of Nigel off his fridge and began getting on with his day.

After haranguing Harry at The Arches, he stopped by the cafe for a double egg and chips (hold the chat from Kathy). Jay tried to reach out, but Phil was still giving him the cold shoulder for calling Julie in the first place.

Next up to stick their oar in was Kat, who suggested that maybe it was for the best Nigel had gone back to Scotland. After sending his ex-wife packing, Phil stropped off, leaving his lunch uneaten. Well, who can blame him? The state of those eggs!

Phil attacked Johnny and Callum

Linda was next to show her concern, at The Vic. At least he was more receptive to her than the others, accepting her invite for a cup of tea upstairs. But rather than chilling Phil out, Linda only managed to pour fuel on the fire – after he stumbled across a loved-up Johnny and Callum emerging from their most recent rendezvous.

Phil immediately flew off the handle, grabbing Callum by the throat and strangling Johnny. As Jay and Billy rushed upstairs to intercept, Phil lashed out at all around him – exploding at Linda for enabling their affair.

Back home, Callum tried to explain the toll losing Ben had taken, and how he’d sought comfort in Johnny. Phil wouldn’t have any of his pleas not to tell Ben or Lexi, and promised not to see Johnny again.

Later, Jay met up with Callum in the cafe. Jay was more sympathetic to Callum’s plight, and suggested that he try and move on from Johnny. Learning that Phil was planning on telling Ben, Jay rushed over, and confronted Phil.

He accused Phil of lashing out over Nigel, and still being in a fragile state. Backed into a corner, Phil turned on the boys, informing them that he planned on taking custody of Lexi, away from Callum and Jay.

Stacey had an unexpected windfall in EastEnders tonight

Stacey and Kat congratulated themselves on a job well done in winding up Ian. ‘News’ of her credit card win had started to spread, and everyone wanted a piece.

Talking of wanting a piece: there was a knock on the door from a man in a suit, and Stacey feared it might be a bailiff. At Stacey’s Baps, she was venting to Kat and Eve when Ian came over to brag about the meeting he’d just had with his bank.

Done with his nonsense, Stacey snapped, admitting that the scratch card win had been a lie. Back home, she and Eve finally let the mystery man in the suit inside. Turns out, he wasn’t a bailiff, he was a representative from Martin’s insurance company. She was the main beneficiary of Martin’s life insurance policy,

Just like that, Stacey was £100,000 the richer again. For real, this time. But what to do with £100k? And, just like that, the bid for The Queen Vic is back on.

Ravi planned for the future

Ravi swung by The Arches with the next shipment of drugs for Harry. He was impressed with his new employee’s knack for dealing, and was congratulating Harry when Phil swung by for a visit.

Now at a loose end, he’s going to be spending a lot more time at The Arches. With Phil lurking, Ravi visited Harry at Kojo’s flat instead. Harry’s new living situation had Ravi scheming again, and suggested that they use the flat as the perfect cover for their drugs business.

Oscar turned over a new leaf

With apparently no hangover to show for yesterday’s binge, Oscar started work on the market stall – and Peter wasn’t impressed by his trance music soundtrack. This earned them a shouting-at from Honey, before Oscar sauntered off on a self-imposed break.

Lauren found him back at home, having slouched off for the day. His gift of a pair of sunglasses for Jimmy didn’t go down well (“you can’t give a blind baby sunglasses! He’ll look like Stevie Wonder!”). Evidently, Tanya hadn’t passed on the message.

Shocked to learn of the pressure Lauren’s been under, he finally pulled up his big boy pants and vowed to make a go of it at the stall. Returning to work, he set about proving his worth.

Back home, an impressed Peter sang Oscar’s praises to Lauren. He returned home with a new gift for Stevie Jimmy – a textured toy, paid for out of his very own wages. Oscar’s moving in the right direction where his family is concerned but, with another threatening text from Fat Mike, he’s not out of hot water yet.

Is Oscar putting his family in danger?
