Joel's trial in tatters as traumatised Vicki flees the courtroom in early iPlayer release

Is Joel about to walk free?

WARNING: This article is full of spoilers for today’s episode of EastEnders, which is streaming on BBC iPlayer now, but has not yet aired on BBC One – in which Joel’s trial starts and Vicki gives evidence.

The day of Joel’s trial has finally arrived, and while Vicki might not be in the best headspace for the day ahead, thanks to her night of passion with Zack, she doesn’t have time to dwell.

After sneaking out of Zack’s flat, Vicki is horrified to be greeted by a worried Ross once she gets home. He makes her feel even more guilty when he offers his support for the day in court. When he asks where she has been, she lies that she slept at Mark’s.

As everyone piles into a taxi, Zack makes a last-minute dash to catch up. Things are tense as Vicky, Ross and Zack make polite conversation.

Mark is confused when Vicki asks him to cover for her and pretend that she spent the night at his. However, she shuts down his digging and tells him now isn’t the time.

EastEnders: Joel’s trial gets underway

Joel meets with his lawyer to discuss what will happen in court, and it is clear he hasn’t changed. He’s still the cocky teenager who thinks the world owes him a favour.

Convinced he is going to get off scot-free, he asks Ross if they can have takeaway for dinner… but Ross clearly doesn’t share his son’s confidence.

As the court case starts, Tommy takes the stand and gets emotional as he gives evidence against his former friend.

Next up is Vicki, and despite it being emotional, all goes well as she tells the court what happened the night he attacked her.

However, things take a sinister turn when the defence grills Vicki. He paints her as a cheater and someone who came in and rocked Joel’s family life.

As the questions get more personal, Vicki crumbles under the pressure and races out of court.

But instead of realising the emotional damage he has caused, Joel just sits there and smirks.

Vicki walks out

Mark and Zack are waiting outside the courtroom when Vicky comes running out. She explains what happened and is an emotional wreck.

Vicki tells them she’s done with the whole case and doesn’t care what happens to Joel anymore.

Ross comes running out of the court, and Vicki is fuming with him because he didn’t stand up for her. He tells her that it isn’t fair, and he would have been thrown out, but Vicki is done and leaves the courthouse in tears. Ross, Mark and Zack are helpless as they watch her go.

Has Joel’s lawyer managed to pin the blame on Vicki, and could Joel be getting that takeaway for dinner after all?
