EastEnders review: Ross was shunned, Joel was banged up and OMG Harry's still in chains

At this point we just want Harry's awful storyline to end - we don't care how!
Kerry Barrett

Our EastEnders review this week was quite hard to write, because frankly the goings on in Albert Square were quite hard to watch! But not in a bad way. The aftermath of Joel’s vicious attack on stepmum Vicki wasn’t easy viewing – but it was gripping.

As Joel was locked up for the brutal beating, poor Vicki was rushed to hospital, Tommy dobbed his friend in, and dad Ross and the rest of the Walford residents reeled in shock.

And we were reeling in shock at some of the behaviour on the Square too!

Here’s what we thought of the action in this week’s EastEnders review.

The aftermath of Joel’s attack in our EastEnders review

Poor Vicki was in a bad way after the attack by Joel, and we were relieved when she made it to the pub and the ambulance arrived. But poor Vicki’s bruises weren’t the only aftermath of the vicious attack – not by a long way.

First up, Tommy tried to protect his mate, Joel. But as he put two and two together, he realised that Joel wasn’t telling the truth about what happened.

After a chat with big sister Zoe – which was frankly the best thing Zoe’s done since her return – Tommy did the right thing and dobbed in his mate.

Meanwhile, dad Ross also finally did the right thing and handed over all Joel’s dodgy videos. Joel was fuming. But it was definitely the right thing to do. Big thumbs up to Tommy for being so brave. It’s not easy standing up to your mates.

Facing the wrath of Walford

Of course, Ross isn’t going to win any parenting prizes any time soon, and he’s definitely partly responsible for Joel’s awful behaviour. But we couldn’t help thinking the Beales had absolutely no right to be quite so judgy. In fact, nor did the Slaters. Or indeed, most people in Walford!

But the Beales did seem to have forgotten that Bobby KILLED his sister. He killed her. And not accidentally either. And he whacked Jane with a hockey stick. But they forgave him.

And, by the way, Kathy while we’re on the subject, Ben’s no angel either. In fact he also… *checks notes* oh yes, that’s right. He also KILLED someone. For which you took no responsibility whatsoever because you were busy faking your own death at the time.

Anyway, Joel is a terrible, terrible person, there’s no doubt. But listen up, Walfordians. Let’s all put our own houses in order before we start throwing the insults about, shall we?

Jasmine and Oscar look cosy

EastEnders review: Oscar and Jasmine and Nigel

Oscar’s pursuit of Jasmine is part super-cute and part totally cringe, but we were not happy about them dragging Nigel into their flirtation this week. We get that Oscar was trying to be nice. At least, we think he was trying to be nice by encouraging Nigel to sell his car to buy Julie a trip to India. But we’re still not sure about Oscar.

Anyway, his interaction with Nigel was awkward and uncomfortable and felt a little bit exploitative. Not cool.

Harry’s still in chains

Oh please, please make this awful storyline stop. We hate it. We hate it. Oh did we mention we hate it? BUT we did see a tiny glimmer of hope this week, when Gina seemed to twig that something isn’t right with her man. PLEASE track him down, Gina. We beg you.

EastEnders review: Ravi and Okie

Ravi’s conflict

One thing we do quite like is Ravi’s conflict between being the Big Drugs Boss and being a family man. It all came to a head this week when Avani was told that Joel had filmed them having sex and had shared the video online. Avani, not surprisingly, was distraught, and she needed her dad. Ravi stepped up. But Okie wasn’t pleased about it. Does this mean bad news for Ravi?

EastEnders review: Julie and Jean

We’re still not fully on board with Nigel’s storyline but we are enjoying Julie’s return. And her scenes with Jean this week were a lovely break from all the drama. More of that, please!
