EastEnders review: Teddy's gone to jail, Sam's gone too far, and Jasmine's back!

This week was a bit of a slog, we can't lie

Our EastEnders review this week is limping towards Christmas, though even at this stage in December the big festive stories aren’t obvious. What’s going to happen over Christmas in Albert Square? Erm… we’ve got no idea!

Which is a little unsettling given the big day is only two weeks away.

This week felt a little like loose ends being tied up before the festive season really gets started. Which wasn’t overly exciting, to be honest. We’re just counting the days until Max returns!

Anyway, here’s everything we thought about this week’s episodes in our EastEnders review.

EastEnders review: Teddy went to jail

The big story this week was Teddy being sentenced for murdering Okie. Even though Harry was actually the one to kill him.

Harry was distraught that his dad had changed his plea to guilty, and George took him home to calm him down. The two men had a very strange conversation. First of all, George gave Harry a sip of water and then asked if he was feeling better. Yep, all fine now, George. Thanks.

Then Harry asked George – former champion boxer – if he’d ever hurt anyone. Now, we’re not boxing experts but we reckon there have a been a few injuries to George’s opponents over the years – and that’s just the fights that were legal.

George comforted Harry

Anyway, George told Harry all about watching his adoptive dad kill his biological dad, and Harry told the truth about who’d really killed Okie.

Then he decided he needed to take the blame instead.

Which actually makes a lot of sense because Harry had really good mitigating circumstances that led to him killing Okie, and (with the reminder that we are also not legal experts) we actually reckon he wouldn’t have been charged with murder but instead with manslaughter, and with a bit of Ritchie magic and everything would have been okay.

But no, Teddy took the blame, and now he’s banged up for life. Which everyone seemed surprised about back on the Square, even though he’d pleaded guilty to murder and that always means life.

Even Ritchie had given up by that point and sent her assistant instead. We don’t blame her. She seems much better at getting guilty people off than innocent ones. It’s a puzzle.

Then Harry overdosed again, and we don’t care at this point. We like Harry but this drugs stuff is so boring. How many times have we complained about that in this EastEnders review now? A lot! And we feel a bit weary knowing there has to be more Ravi/Jack/drugs stories ahead.

EastEnders review: Nicola and her baby

While Harry was being looked after in the hospital, Nicola had a health scare of her own. She went for an ultrasound and George – who’d just found out the news about his baby – went too. The pair shared a moment and agreed they were doing this pregnancy together. Aww.

Gina found the whole thing hilarious, which was actually pretty funny in itself.

Sam’s back

We love Sam Mitchell and we are delighted that she is back. We loved her little dig to Zoe when predictably Zoe accused her of being the stalker. YAWN.

“Not everything is about you, sweetheart,” said Sam.

Anyway, it turns out Sam thinks she’s got breast cancer like her mum, Peggy. Convinced she was dying, she wanted to give son Ricky some money to set him up for life. First, she tried to take it from Phil’s safe, though she was spotted by Nigel who thought she was Clare and dobbed her into Phil (accidentally).

Then she tried to con some wonga out of Jack and Denise, which if you think about it, was ultimately taking it from Ricky to give to Ricky.

And finally she got Nigel to transfer his life savings to her instead.

But what’s happened to her?

Sam is a great character. She’s manipulative and funny, smart, cunning. But one thing she’s not, is cruel. And while she makes mistakes – often – she’s not a bad person. Not really.

But swindling the money out of Nigel in the way she did was awful. Unforgiveable really. And actually, probably illegal. We’re glad Julie gave her a punch in the face.

Normally we think Phil is unnecessarily mean to his sister, but she deserved everything she got this week.

Hopefully this weird change of character is done and dusted now and we can move on to just enjoying Sam’s return.

Jasmine needs help!

Another return this week – right in the final minutes of Thursday’s episode – was Jasmine. She looked scared and edgy as she asked Oscar to help her.

Why is she back and what is she scared of? We can’t wait to find out!
