Oscar wasn’t the only one bringing the laughs though, and there was plenty more (both intentional and unintentional) humour elsewhere. From a shocking meal at the café to Johnny Carter‘s choice of casual wear, there was lots to smile about, between the usual tears and heartbreak. Here’s our pick of EastEnders’ funniest moments this week. Oscar’s taking Walford by storm (Credit: BBC) 1. Hurricane Oscar Out of respect to everyone who might not be enjoying the character as much as I am, I’ve resisted the urge to title this one ‘6 Funniest Oscar Branning Moments on EastEnders This Week,’ and restricted myself to only one entry. Narrowing that down to just one line or moment will prove troublesome though, given the abundance of material Oscar left us to work with. He started strong out of the gate, with stories of ‘Fat Mike’ and their mate who once ‘decked a seagull.’ Article continues below Read all the latest spoilers The comedy continued throughout the week, in his mission to wind up anyone and everyone in his path (somehow not getting dangled off a railway bridge by Ravi in the process). His number one target? Ian Beale. This scored some of the week’s funniest moments as he conned Ian out of a handful of cash, and one of the soap’s most risqué lines too. “He’s milking it!” protested Ian, of Oscar’s so-called chip shop injury. “I can’t milk it!” Oscar replied, “that’s sort of the point!” Their feud continued outside, as Ian proceeded to wrestle with a teenage boy in the middle of the street. “Paedo!” Oscar yelled during the ensuing scuffle, completing Ian’s (mostly self-inflicted) humiliation. If we had to choose one Oscar moment for this list? It’s the running gag of calling Ian ‘Brian,’ which finds beauty in its simplicity. It’s no wonder he was in such a bad mood (Credit: BBC) 2. Breakfast at Kathy’s Stewing after losing his Nigel-of-war / tug-of-Nigel to Julie, Phil was determined not to return to old habits. Rather than staying home and wallowing in his misery, he headed to the café for a spot of breakfast. Between rounds of being harangued by Kathy, Kat and Jay, he was also served the single worst plate of food outside of Jean’s sausage surprise. “It’s a bit crispy around the edges. But a lot of people ask for it like that,” claimed Kathy – who is apparently still unable to fry an egg after several decades of working in the same café. Jack had the best line of the week (Credit: BBC) 3. Jack’s got jokes Amid all of this week’s Oscar Branning scenes, it was uncle Jack who got the best line. Sitting down for a chat in McKlunky’s, he pressed his nephew on what he’d been up to and who he’d been dating. Revealing that he’s bisexual, Oscar shared that he’d had a girlfriend – but had been more attracted to her dad instead. After a surprisingly tender exchange regarding Oscar’s own dad, Jack dropped the line of the week. “A mini bisexual Max Branning on the loose? No-one’s safe,” joked Jack, proving that he can do more than just shout and order takeaways when he wants to. Phil strangled Linda’s sausage (Credit: BBC) 4. Throttling Johnny As his day went from bad to worse, Phil joined Linda upstairs at The Vic for a cup of tea. Instead, he found Callum and Johnny, doing a spectacularly bad job of hiding their affair. Turning as red as a tomato, Phil exploded, grabbing Callum by the face and throttling Johnny. Violence is never funny (especially not given the optics of a gammon-faced straight dude attacking two gay men), but the sight of a 64-year-old Phil Mitchell taking on two 30-year-olds (one of whom is a trained police officer) and not immediately giving himself a heart attack were some of the soap’s silliest scenes this week. Even more amusing than Johnny’s I’m-being-choked-face was his mum’s reaction – standing by and watching as Phil gave her son the ol’ Bart Simpson treatment. To be fair, we all know what happened last time she intervened while someone was being choked out in The Vic. Peter ruined everything… again (Credit: BBC) 5. Detective Beale and Beale It’s part of Oscar’s charm that he also managed to convince Peter and Lauren to lighten up too. As she and Peter collected Oscar from the Young Offender’s Institute, Lauren watched as Fat Mike and his pals arrived in search of revenge. Not to be deterred, Lauren strode over – passing herself off as ‘Detective Beale’ in an attempt to give the thugs a scare. Emboldened by his fiancée, Peter joined her as backup. Unfortunately, he succeeded only in blowing the whole thing by speaking into a non-existent mic while also calling himself Detective Beale. Peter Beale, Wally Squad, maybe. But at least it made a nice change from them both screaming at each other and blaming Lauren for everything. What is Johnny wearing? (Credit: BBC) 6. Johnny’s vest As Callum attempted to advise a conflicted Jay over what to do about Nigel, he grew distracted by the sight of Johnny, making eyes from across the bar. Callum wasn’t the only one distracted. I did a full-on double-take at the sight of Johnny propping up The Queen Vic in that white vest. We know you live there, Johnny, but would it have hurt to put on a shirt? Still, Callum was obviously a fan. Read more: Who’s leaving, joining and returning to EastEnders?
