Stacey's financial status explained as fans confused by latest move

Inside Stacey Slater's ever-fluctuating bank account
Joel Harley

Stacey Slater came into quite a bit of money in EastEnders last night (Wednesday, July 16) as she learned that Martin had made her the beneficiary of his life insurance policy. Earlier in the episode, Stacey was terrified that she was about to lose everything after a man in a suit came knocking.

Assuming that it was a bailiff, she explained to Kat and Eve that she wasn’t sure if she’d been keeping up with all the bills. With Martin gone, she’d been shoving a few ‘brown letters’ away without opening them. This might have left her at risk of a visit from the bailiffs… she just wasn’t sure.

As it turned out, Stacey’s visitor was a representative from Martin’s insurance agency. She was shocked as he revealed that she stood to inherit £100,000 from Martin’s death.

However, something about these scenes didn’t add up for some viewers.

EastEnders fans confused at Stacey’s finances amid more money problems

Writing on social media as this week’s scenes aired, EastEnders fans shared their confusion about Stacey Slater’s money problems. While some wondered how she could be so hard-up after renting a flat in London last month, others wanted to know why she was giving away £100k so freely.

“But it wasn’t that long ago that she was able to rent that flat while Zoe was in hiding. And now bailiffs are at her door,” pointed out one viewer.

“100k for some sort of deposit ? Where is she or they getting the rest from?” asked another.

“Fairytale writing and deus ex free money for the Slaters to own the Vic. Nevermind that Stacey has so many debts and her kids live in filth, but she comes into free money and gives it to Kat to buy a new business?” said a third.

“The concept of stacey winning 100k then using it to buy the vic that she won’t work at or earn money from rather than keeping it to look after herself and her kids after struggling to survive for months having nothing in the house resorting to cam work to get by,” a fourth noted.

What exactly is going on with Stacey’s cash flow?

Stacey Slater’s finances explained

Earlier in the week, Stacey and the Slaters scammed Ian by pretending to have won £100k on a scratch card. This was just a wind-up, but by the very next day, Stacey did find herself £100k richer.

Good timing, too. At the Bap Van, she explained how her finances had gotten so bad that a bailiff’s visit might have been expected.  “Money’s tight!” she told Eve. “Harvey don’t pay no more and Martin used to chip in more than he needed to.”

As for the £100k deposit, spoilers for next week reveal that Kat takes a meeting with a bank to discuss a loan for the rest of it. How Stacey managed to rent a flat in central London by herself last month, however, has yet to be satisfactorily explained.
