What's old is new again: as fans slam 'repetitive' Cindy attack, all the times the soap has repeated its recent past

What... again?

Cindy Beale fell victim to an attack in EastEnders last night (Monday, November 24), being pushed down a flight of stairs by Jasmine as she lashed out. This came as Cindy dug for dirt on the mysterious newcomer, meeting with Jasmine’s mum as her investigation picked up pace.

What, again? Fans have been quick to note that this is the second time in less than a year that someone has attacked Cindy and left her for dead.

EastEnders fans slam ‘repetitive’ writing following Cindy attack

As Cindy’s attack aired last night, fans took to social media to share their sense of déjà vu.

“So last year in the month leading up to Christmas we had someone who had been kidnapped and chained up and then Cindy having a fight with someone on some outside stairs and one of them being pushed off,” wrote one fan on Reddit, of recent events.

“Why is Cindy being attacked again didn’t we just have that storyline?” asked another.

“It has become so repetitive. I could easily miss a few episodes and not notice because every episode is the same,” said a third.

Another agreed: “I really can’t cope with more months of Cindy wandering round whining that “someone tried to kill me, I could have died.” We had enough of that at the start of the year.”

Has the soap fallen into a habit of recycling old storylines? Let’s take a look, shall we?

1. Cindy falls victim to attack on Christmas in EastEnders

Last Christmas, as her affair with Junior Knight was exposed, Cindy fell victim to a brutal attack. It proved to be Kathy Beale who done it, in the shadows, with the snow shovel (a twist which still proves to be contentious with fans).

This, in turn, came only months after Cindy herself pushed someone down a staircase, knocking them unconscious. Thankfully both Cindy and Kojo made a full recovery… long enough for history to repeat itself with Jasmine’s own attack upon Cindy.

At least we know whodunnit this time, even if we don’t know why exactly they did what they dun.

2. Harry and Bianca’s kidnap saga

In one of this year’s longest and hardest-hitting storylines, Harry found himself trapped in the heart of Ravi Gulati’s drugs business, as an unwilling foot soldier. This ended with Ravi and Okie holding him captive, keeping him chained to a radiator when they learned how he’d tried to betray them.

Fans were quick to notice that this came less than 12 months after another character was kidnapped and chained up for weeks on end. That’d be Bianca Jackson, who was held captive by bumbling villain Reiss Colwell after she learned he killed his comatose wife, Debbie.

3. A very Christmassy flashforward

In 2023, the soap made EastEnders history by airing its first flashforward. Offering a glimpse of that year’s Christmas special, it revealed that six women would be behind a mystery murder on Albert Square… a murder that wound up being Keanu Taylor, in a shocking confrontation between him, Sharon, Linda and a meat thermometer.

Obviously happy with how that played out, EastEnders will be repeating the trick with a whole flashforward episode in 2026. Airing on New Years’ Day, it will follow Max Branning as he attempts to navigate a tricky situation of his own causing.

4. Lauren and Jean are scammed

This week’s EastEnders spoilers reveal that Lauren is to fall victim to a cruel scam, targeting baby Jimmy. This comes a year after Jean Slater was conned out of her pension fund after falling victim to fake financial advisors.

5. Stalking Miss Slater

As anyone who has watched any episode of EastEnders since Halloween will know, someone is stalking Zoe. But who? And why? And what will she pay for?

Zoe’s not the first Slater woman to fall victim to a stalker’s advances. In 2023, sinister Theo Hawthorne targeted cousin Stacey after becoming enamored. When she didn’t return her advances, he attacked, attempting to assault her in her own kitchen.

Thankfully, Freddie managed to intervene, knocking Theo unconscious first. Theo may have been motivated by lust rather than hatred of Stacey, but that still makes Zoe the second Slater to fall victim to a stalker in recent years.
