Who was Paul Trueman? Inside the life and tragic death of Patrick's other son

Remembering the tragic Paul Trueman
Joel Harley

This week’s episodes of EastEnders have seen the return of prodigal son Anthony Trueman, returning to his father’s side ahead of his wedding to Yolande. However, Anthony’s return has come under a dark cloud, with the doctor soon learning that his dad was attacked by Oscar.

Anthony encouraged Patrick to call the police, making the youth face justice for his crime. However, Patrick was reminded of another youth who made some bad decisions in his lifetime. Namely, his son and Anthony’s brother, Paul.

But who exactly was Paul Trueman? And how did he die?

Who was Paul Trueman on EastEnders?

Paul was the black sheep brother of golden child Anthony. Paul first arrived in Walford in April 2003, as the wild child brother of Anthony and son of Audrey. He didn’t exactly get a warm welcome from his mother though, and decided to stick around in spite of her continued coldness toward her son.

It soon became clear that Paul and Anthony shared a dark secret. When he’d been younger, Anthony had let Paul take the rap for a drink driving accident he had actually been responsible – allowing Paul to serve jail time in his place.

Paul admitted the truth to their mother as she lay dying. He was left heartbroken by his mother’s final act of cruelty, refusing to admit that she loved him, even with her dying breath. Soon after, their estranged father Patrick arrived in Walford for Audrey’s funeral – although a DNA test subsequently revealed that Paul was not Patrick’s biological son at all.

How did Paul die?

In 2004, Paul became mixed up with gangster Andy Hunter. Coerced by the police into becoming an informant, Paul found himself on the mobster’s wrong side after Andy realised that he’d been betrayed.

Paul attempted to flee, but a hitman posing as a taxi driver intercepted before he could leave. After bidding his father goodbye, Paul reluctantly climbed into the back of the killer’s taxi, begging him to ‘make it quick.’

Patrick learned the truth about Paul’s fate when rival gangster Johnny Allen arranged to have the body unearthed, as a plot to bring Andy down. A devastated Patrick was forced to identify his son’s body.

Of his exit storyline, actor Gary Beadle told The Mirror: “I hate the storyline, I’m really not happy about it. It’s so unimaginative, full of stereotypes – black people and drugs, blah, blah, blah. Any scenes involving drugs, you can rest assured I hated filming them.

“I just knew Paul wouldn’t do that. It’s not his style. Once they started hanging my character so dramatically, I knew I’d made the right decision to leave.”
