Out of the Dust on Netflix sees Siobhan Finneran join a shady Christian cult – but what else do we know about the upcoming new psychological thriller?

Our next streaming-binge gathers a host of British acting talent to tell a revelatory tale about cults and saviours… In Out of the Dust, a young woman’s life in a religious commune is upended when a rebellious criminal arrives. Is this new face the liberator he claims to be? Or will he pull our young heroine into even darker territory?

That’s the conundrum at the heart of Out of the Dust, a tense new drama designed to keep us guessing. It’s written by Julie Gearey, the same screenwriter behind much-loved hits like Prisoners’ Wives, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and Intergalactic.

Combine this writing credit with an impressive cast list and it’s no wonder why this one has landed firmly on our radar. Keep reading to discover all we know so far about Netflix’s Out of the Dust.

What is the plot of new Netflix show Out of the Dust?

Out of the Dust will bring Netflix viewers into the close quarters of a Christian sect. That’s enough to pique our interest, to be honest!

It’s here where we meet Rosie, wife to cult member Adam, and mother to a young daughter. Life in this community setting is close knit and controlled. However, Rosie’s faith is tested when an escaped convict named Sam enters her world.

Netflix’s official plot line explains in more detail: “The fateful arrival of the mysterious Sam, an escaped prisoner, reveals the reality and restraints of Rosie’s world. Perhaps her hidden religious community doesn’t have her best interests at heart.

“As the cracks begin to appear in Rosie and Adam’s marriage, Sam presents as Rosie’s savior. But, with his dark criminal past, where does the greatest danger lie – with the cult, or with Sam?”

Cue a sure-to-be nail-biting crisis of faith.

Who plays Rosie and Adam in the cast?

Molly Windsor will play Rosie, the conflicted woman at the heart of Netflix drama Out of the Dust.

Since 2007, this rising star – now 28 – has appeared in a range of projects on the big and small screen. Viewers may have spotted her as Angie in 2019 feature The Runaways and, more recently, in the 2022 #MeToo drama She Said.

On TV, she played Lucy in 2009’s The Unloved, a story about a child in care. She was a child herself at the time. Ten years later, she played the central role of Emma Hedges in Alibi’s Traces opposite Red Eye’s Martin Compston. Other notable roles include Holly Winshaw in Three Girls, Martha in War of the Worlds, and Rose in Cheat with Katherine Kelly.

Asa Butterfield joins as her husband and fellow cult member Adam. A former child actor himself, Asa appeared in 2008’s critically acclaimed drama The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. He counts Martin Scorsese as a collaborator following his appearance in the 2011 film Hugo.

These days, Butterfield is best known for playing Otis Milburn in Netflix hit Sex Education.

Who else stars in the psychological thriller?

Happy Valley fan favourite Siobhan Finneran joins the cast as Mrs Phillips. Meanwhile, Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston plays her husband, Mr Phillips.

These two pillars of Brit acting talent will play a key role in Rosie’s story. However, we’ll have to wait for Out of the Dust to hit our screens to learn more about their motives.

Throwing a spanner into the works is actor Fra Fee, who plays Sam. Sam is an escaped convict who forces Rosie to question the true intentions of the commune she calls home. That said, it’s unclear whether he’s offering anything safer.

Northern Irish actor and singer Fra played Kazi in Marvel spin-off series Hawkeye. He also played Courfeyrac in Tom Hooper’s epic movie adaptation of Les Misérables. More recently, he played Andy in the BBC’s Lost Boys & Fairies, and Leo Woodall’s love interest Adam Mellor in Prime Target.

As far as cast details go, that’s all we know for now. Keep checking back though as we’re sure Netflix will add more names to the cast list soon enough.

Is Out of the Dust based on a book?

Despite a wealth of recent streaming hits being based on books, Out of the Dust is actually an original story.

Julie Gearey created the show and acts as its writer. She’s a screenwriter with extensive experience crafting compelling small-screen dramas.

Her originality fills the series with a sense of real surprise and intrigue. With a lack of source material to snoop on, there’s no telling what shocks, twists or turns Out of the Dust will bring when it finally hits Netflix.

How many episodes will there be?

Out of the Dust is a mini-series which will consist of six episodes. We suspect each instalment will run to aboutan hour.

The series filmed in the United Kingdom in summer 2024, with production starting in August. According to The Film & Television Industry Alliance, it’s primarily London-based.

What’s the start date of Out of the Dust on Netflix?

Netflix has not yet confirmed when Out of the Dust will be landing on the streaming channel. But we have a hunch that it might be sooner rather than later.

We’re long overdue an Out of the Dust update from Netflix. With the shoot already in the bag, its release date could potentially be any day now.

As soon as we know more, you’ll find the information you need here – so check back soon.

Is there a trailer?

Unfortunately there’s no trailer for the series as yet. While Rosie may be keen to make a break from her Christian cult surroundings, an Out of the Dust trailer remains firmly indoctrinated and locked away in Netflix towers.

That said, as time ticks on, some footage from this highly-anticipated Netflix show will no doubt become available. Watch this space.
