The Trial on Channel 5: Cast of 'provocative' drama led by Claire Skinner, Ben Miles and Saoirse-Monica Jackson
By Natasha Rigler | Thu May 08 2025The Trial on Channel 5 has assembled a small but impressive cast to tell a terrifying tale that will leave every parent fearful of what the future could hold.
Claire Skinner and Ben Miles star as Dione and David Sinclair in the one-off drama, as a couple who are being held responsible for their teenage daughter’s crime.
Set in 2035, the show gives a thought-provoking insight into what might happen if parents are ever legally hauled into the dock.

The Trial - billed as a 'TV movie' - also features India Fowler as Dione and David’s troublesome teen, Teah.
It is being aired during Channel 5’s Lawless Britain Week, which comes after a 5 News poll found the majority of Brits feel crime is now out of control.
But is prosecuting parents like Dione and David the answer?
Here’s who plays who in the cast of The Trial and what shows you might have seen them in before.
Claire Skinner stars as Dione Sinclair
Claire Skinner, 60, takes on a lead role in The Trial as Dione Sinclair, a mum who has found herself on trial after her daughter Teah committed a crime.
The actress is best known for starring as Sue Brockman in the hit BBC comedy Outnumbered.
Claire first took on the role of Sue in 2007 and continued to entertain audiences in the show for seven years.
In 2016, Claire and the rest of the Outnumbered cast returned for a Christmas special.
Last December, they again reprised their Outnumbered roles for another festive instalment - 17 years on from where it all started.
Born and raised in Hemel Hempstead, Claire dreamed of becoming an actress from a young age.
She previously admitted: “I was terribly shy as a child, and acting became the best way to take me out of myself.
“It was great, aged 10, to discover that I could do the thing I loved for a living.”
After leaving school, she made her dream a reality by studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Claire joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and began her career treading the boards.
In 2004, she got her big television break in the ITV comedy Life Begins as Clare, the best friend of lead character Maggie - played by Caroline Quentin.
Throughout her career, Claire has also enjoyed roles in Lark Rise To Candleford and the 2011 Doctor Who Christmas special.
Earlier this year, it was revealed Claire had married her Outnumbered co-star Hugh Dennis in 2022.
The actress has two sons, who she shares with her ex-husband, director Charles Palmer.

Ben Miles stars as David Sinclair
Born in London, Ben Miles only joined up to school drama productions because it meant he could "miss classes".
But it soon became clear he had a natural talent.
Ben has since enjoyed a successful television career, in shows such as Lark Rise To Candleford and Cold Feet, and as Peter Townsend in The Crown.
Noughties comedy fans will remember him as Patrick Maitland in romcom Coupling.
Ben also portrayed Commander Danny Hart in The Capture series 1 and 2 from 2019 to 2022.
He is currently playing Tay Kolma in Disney+'s Andor and previously starred as Robin Allen in Hijack, and Toby in Douglas Is Cancelled.
Ben is married to actress Emily Raymond and they have three adult children together.
The couple once even starred alongside each other in an episode of medical drama Peak Practice.
Ben met Emily, who has starred in Doctor Who, when they were in a play together.
He previously admitted: "It took me until the end of the run which was about six weeks to ask her out for a drink."
Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Sarah Willis
Born in Derry, Northern Ireland, Saoirse-Monica Jackson’s breakout role could have been written for her.
Long before landing the part of “relentless” inquisitor Sarah Willis in The Trial, she was cast as Erin Quinn in the Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls.
Saoirse-Monica’s portrayal of the 90s teen school girl saw her nominated for Best Female at the IFTA Gala Television Awards.
The actress, 31, was in good company too, as she played the part of Erin opposite The Feud’s Jamie Lee O’Donnell.
When it comes to her own school days, Saoirse-Monica left with a string of GCSEs and A-Levels before enrolling at the Arden School of Theatre in Manchester.

She enjoyed a string of stage roles after graduating and also appeared in Harlan Coben’s 2016 thriller, The Five, and 2023 superhero movie The Flash.
Last year, Saoirse-Monica was praised for her role in Netflix hit The Decameron.
She has since wowed viewers with her portrayal as Cheryl Crawford in This City Is Ours.
Saoirse-Monica was lauded for her performance in the BBC crime drama, especially as she had to adopt a Liverpudlian accent.
Behind closed doors, Saorise-Monica is engaged to DJ Denis Sulta, real name Hector Barbour.
She recently told Cosmopolitan: “I love being at home with Hector. We love chilling and not being at the centre of cool parties – watching Moana with him makes me so happy."
The Trial cast member India Fowler is Teah Sinclair
Still early in her career, India Fowler has already had some pretty impressive roles.
In The Trial, she takes on the character of troublesome teen Teah Sinclair.
Teah has found herself in custody - and her parents also face taking the rap as a result of her crime.
Like her The Trial co-star Saorise-Monica, India is also no stranger to a Harlan Coben thriller.
As a child actress, India got her first big role when she portrayed Ellen Mason in the Netflix series Safe.
While still at school, India also played Child in the stage version of George Orwell’s 1984 at London’s Playhouse Theatre.
India has also appeared in the Netflix show White Lines.

More recently, India played Michael Fassbender’s daughter Poppy in the The Agency.
The US spy series began streaming on Paramount Plus late last year.
India also starred alongside Vicky McClure in the same streamer’s six-parter Insomnia in 2024.
She played Chloe Averill, the teenage daughter of Vicky’s character Emma Averill.
By the series finale, Chloe had been outed as having an affair with a married family friend.
It is double bubble for India this month.
Once The Trial has aired, she will appear in upcoming US slasher film Fear Street: Prom Queen.
Set in 1988, the movie is the fourth instalment in the Fear Street movie series.
India stars as the lead character Lori Granger in the Netflix horror.
Jaz Hutchins as Lieutenant Malik Simons
Hunky Jaz Hutchins is cast as Lt Malik Simons in The Trial.
Simons is dating hard-nosed inquisitor Sarah Willis (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) and he is very much at her beck and call.
Jaz began his television career in 2006 with a small role in the BBC’s Not Going Out.

He was cast as a toy shop security guard in the comedy, which stars Lee Mack and Lucy Adams.
Sticking with comedy and the BBC, Jaz also appeared in nine episodes of Peacock as Mani and in Black Ops as Breeze.
But Jaz’s biggest parts to date came last year, thanks to two film roles.
He first appeared in the Amazon Prime Video movie, Canary Black.
The British action thriller starred A-list actress Kate Beckinsale as a CIA agent on the run.
Jaz played Agent Maxwell, who is in charge of a CIA underground safe house.
The actor also landed a small role in the 2024 movie The Return, which starred Ralph Fiennes as lead character Odysseus.
The previous year, Jaz had played Brett in the critically acclaimed adult animated psychological horror Stopmotion.
