Barrow: The Truth Behind the Grooming Lie is an upcoming documentary that re-examines Ellie Williams’ allegations of rape and assault which were proven to be fabricated.

It was a case that shocked the nation when the young woman made her false claims between October 2017 and May 2020. She was just 16 when she first went to the police.

Over the years, she made up an elaborate, nationwide grooming and trafficking ring. At the time, she was believed. However, police investigations eventually revealed that the claims were all lies and her horrific injuries were self-inflicted…

Now, a new Sky documentary claims to “shed new light” on the case. And it asks if Ellie’s lies actually exposed the truth…

Barrow: The Truth Behind the Grooming Lie on Sky

This new three-part series attempts to “reframe the Ellie Williams case”. It’s arguably one of the most controversial and triggering true crimes of recent years.

A synopsis for the documentary says: “When Ellie Williams’ allegations of grooming went viral, they tore the town of Barrow apart and triggered national outrage. Police quickly denied there was a grooming gang and Ellie was sentenced to eight and a half years in jail. But was there truth beneath the lies? And did the focus on proving one young woman a liar lead to denial of a wider grooming problem?”

This three-part series promises to “shed new light” on the case. It will “move beyond a single question of truth or lies to expose a far wider and more troubling story”.

The series uncovering accounts from other women in Barrow whose allegations of abuse by a group of predominantly Asian men were dismissed or ignored.  Barrow: The Truth Behind the Grooming Lie also explores how far-right groups have weaponised such cases to fuel outrage and mistrust while agencies, wary of racism accusations, have often avoided confronting perpetrators’ ethnicity.

It’s based on extensive access and original research and features survivor testimony and first-time interviews with Ellie Williams’ family. At its heart, the series is “about women who were abused and not believed”.

‘The abuse of young girls has been ignored and dismissed’

Talking about the documentary, Executive Producer Henry Singer said: “We’d previously made a film on the Rochdale grooming scandal. So when the Ellie Williams story broke, something didn’t sit right with us about how the press was telling it.  It just felt there was more to it.

“That was the start of a three-and-a-half-year journey, navigating a tricky landscape to separate fact from fiction. In so doing, we discovered there was a much larger story to tell – not just in Barrow –  but nationally.  The abuse of young girls has been ignored and dismissed for far too long, and we hope the series does justice to their voices and sparks a long-overdue debate.”

Who is Ellie Williams?

Eleanor ‘Ellie’ Williams, of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, was a schoolgirl who alleged she had been groomed and raped by a gang of Asian men from the age of 12 and trafficked for sex.

Born on November 26 2000, she was 16 years old when she made her first allegation of rape in 2017. She made her most prominent and widely publicised allegations on social media in May 2020, when she was 19 years old.

Her most notable claim was a viral Facebook post published on May 19, 2020, where she included graphic photos of her self-inflicted injuries. We’ve included one of these pictures below, so stop here if you’d rather not see it.

The shared images of her facial injuries sparked protests in Barrow-in-Furness. A surge in hate crime followed, with residents within the Asian community receiving death threats and being verbally abused and spat at. Some businesses were also vandalised.

However, a police investigation and subsequent trial at Preston Crown Court found her claims were lies and her injuries self-inflicted.

Where is she now?

Investigations proved that Ellie’s accusations were fabricated. In 2023, a jury took just three and a half hours to find Eleanor Williams unanimously guilty of perverting the course of justice. She was 22 at the time, and jailed for eight and a half years. Ellie is currently serving her sentence.

During the trial, she was described as a “serial fantasist” and her claims that she was groomed by an Asian gang were proven to be lies in 50 hours of police videos.

False allegations of rape are extremely rare. But, when they are made, they can seriously undermine the credibility of genuine victims, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

One man spent 10 weeks in prison because of Ellie’s accusations before being released. Two others attempted to take their own lives following her claims.

Why did she do it?

Ellie Williams has not explained her behaviour. At her trial, the judge said he had “received much psychiatric evidence in this case, but there is no explanation for why the defendant would commit these offences”.

Det Con Ritchie sais: “It was like, is she having vivid dreams? Is she genuinely thinking this has happened? Is she unwell? She’s obviously a really troubled girl and in that respect, I feel really sorry for her.”

Ellie was the only defence witness and continues to maintain her innocence. Although in an apologetic letter to the judge she admitted having “done wrong on some of this”.

She said she “wasn’t thinking straight” when she made the Facebook post alleging abuse at the hands of an Asian grooming gang.

Ellie Williams ‘had PTSD from childhood trauma’

According to The Guardian, a little insight came during the first day of her sentencing hearing. Dr Lucy Bacon, a forensic psychiatrist who assessed Williams multiple times since 2019, diagnosed complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) resulting from childhood trauma.

Ellie Williams “displayed all of the key symptoms”, said Bacon, including “suicidal ideation and substance misuse”.

Bacon said she had learned to “maintain a mask” to hide her emotions, which she said was very common in trauma. The psychiatrist said she suspected “undisclosed sexual abuse” in childhood, which she said Ellie Williams had referred to “opaquely” in their sessions.

Ellie Williams admitted to taking cocaine and marijuana. Her mother had previously reported her missing 32 times.
