'I’m triggered': Recording of 'insane' phone call of Mackenzie Shirilla laughing in prison with her mother leaves viewers stunned
'I'm a third victim'
Mackenzie Shirilla, the convicted murderer at the heart of Netflix’s The Crash, can be heard talking to her mum from prison in an “insane” recording of a phone call.
The new true crime documentary revolves around Shirilla, a 17-year-old (now 20) who drove her car into a brick wall at 100mph. She survived, but Dominic Russo, her boyfriend, and his friend Davion Flanagan both died. The judge sentenced Shirilla to 15 years to life for murder.
In the wake of The Crash’s release, both Shirilla and her parents, Steve and Natalie, have been the subject of criticism. Viewers have branded her mum and dad – who adamantly believe their daughter didn’t intentionally cause the crash – “delusional” and “tone-deaf”.
To make matters worse, a recording of Mackenzie speaking to her mother from prison has left people online feeling “triggered”.

Mackenzie Shirilla finds out she’s world news in this “sick” phone call
In a clip shared to TikTok, Mackenzie asks her mother if her story is “all over the world”.
“I’ve got to tell you one more thing. It was published in England,” Natalie says. Mackenzie seems very excited, and the pair laugh over the phone.

“I think the Daily Mail just publishes it in all their publications, but yeah, the UK,” Natalie adds. “It’s on the Daily Mail in the UK. Maybe Kim Kardashian will reach out herself,” Mackenzie says, and her mum says she “hopes” that will happen.
Mackenzie then questions the severity of her charge. “The charges that they gave me are literally insane,” she says, calling herself a “third victim” and describing the incident as a “car accident”.
At the end of the video, Mackenzie’s voice becomes incomprehensible. It sounds like gibberish, but assistant prosecutor Tim Troup described it as being like “pig latin”, and it’s effectively a secret language between them.

In another clip, Natalie asks Mackenzie if she can get a job in prison. There’s a mixture of normal words and Mackenzie’s other language in this video, but it sounds like she’s already fed up. “There’s nothing for me to do in my room,” she says.
In a third TikTok, Mackenzie seems to be reacting to someone in prison, saying: “She annoying as [bleep]… I don’t like her.”
Natalie also tells her that her “story isn’t done yet”, and says Mackenzie could “start writing [her] book”.

‘This is disgraceful’
The recording, which has been viewed over one million times, has left viewers angry and confused (mainly over her “gibberish”).
“This is disgraceful,” one viewer commented. “This conversation is INSANE,” another wrote.
“She sounds genuinely happy! This ain’t someone who’s mourning,” a third observed.

“It’s the laughing for me… I’m triggered,” a fourth wrote. “The parole board will hear all these calls and deny her parole,” a fifth speculated.
“It’s the fact that she and her mom both think it’s a good thing that she is famous regardless of the circumstances,” a sixth user commented.
“The fact that they laughing is insane that’s not funny at all and not a good look,” another wrote. “This is so messed up,” an eighth user added.
