Peaky Blinders creator regrets killing off this ‘badass’ character: ‘I should have kept him alive’

"I could have just wounded him"

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man sees the return of several characters – but it could have been even better if one dead “badass” was never killed off.

The new Netflix movie flashes forward six years after the original ending of Peaky Blinders. Tommy (Cillian Murphy) emerges from exile, with Birmingham in dire straits. Duke (Barry Keoghan) is the Peaky Blinders’ ruthless and careless leader, and the Nazis want his help.

This paves the way for several characters’ returns, whether it’s Ada (Sophie Rundle), Johnny Dogs (Packy Lee), or Hayden Stagg (Stephen Graham).

Alas, some characters from seasons past could never come back – no matter how much fans want them to.

Peaky Blinders fans wish Aberama Gold never died

Aberama Gold (Aidan Gillen) was one of the best characters in the series. He was a Gypsy hitman for hire, and arguably the finest marksman to ever walk Birmingham’s streets.

He was initially hired by Tommy to deal with Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody), but he became more of a recurring character. For example, Tommy agreed to help his son become a boxing champion, and he eventually married Polly Gray (Helen McCrory).

Sadly, he was killed in the season 5 finale as the Peaky Blinders’ plan to assassinate Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) fell apart. The IRA had been tipped off, and Aberama was brutally stabbed to death as he hid in the shadows.

Given the divisive events of The Immortal Man, some fans think Aberama “died for nothing” – and the film could have been even better if he was in the mix.

“Such a cool character, I wish he stuck around,” one user wrote on Reddit. “He had so much potential. I wanted to see him be able to react to Polly’s death and how that would’ve changed him. He didn’t even get to avenge the death of his son properly,” another commented.

“Killing off Aberama Gold is honestly one of the biggest narrative crimes I have ever seen,” a third wrote, with many more calling him a “badass”.

Peaky Blinders creator regrets killing off Aberama Gold

If you miss Aberama Gold, you’re not alone. Even Steven Knight, the creator of the series, wished he’d only given him an injury.

“I should have kept [Aberama] alive, I could have just wounded him,” he told Esquire in 2020.

He’s not the only character Knight would bring back, if he could.

“There’s him playing Barney Thompson (Cosmo Jarvis) who’s just brilliant and I really wish I’d kept him alive now because he’s such a good actor,” he also told the outlet. Barney was killed in the same episode as Aberama, shot and killed by IRA enforcers at one of Oswald’s rallies.

“It’s a funny position where you create these people and then you have to kill them and it’s not nice,” Knight added.
