Eddie Gilfoyle case in The Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt
In June 1992, Eddie and Pauline Gilfoyle appeared the perfect couple. The newlyweds were expecting their first child together and looking to the future.
But all that changed when Pauline was found hanged in the garage of their home in Upton, Wirral. She was 32 years old and her death shocked the community.
Police found a handwritten note at the scene, pointing to Pauline’s death being deliberate on her part. Yet her husband Eddie – a former Army medic who had served in the Falklands – was arrested on suspicion of murder.
The following year, prosecutors told a jury that Eddie had forced Pauline to write the suicide note. The court also heard how he persuaded her to put a noose around her neck and climb a ladder.
Eddie strongly denied the allegations made against him, but he was found guilty and handed a life sentence.

Two appeals failed and Eddie was eventually released on license 17 years later. Now in his 60s, he is still fighting to clear his name.
The Accused: Beyond Reasonable Doubt will hear Eddie’s version of the events and his fight to prove his innocence. The documentary will also hear from legal experts and psychologists about the case, and whether Eddie has now exhausted all avenues.
